Cuba with the Locals

Cuba remains as enigmatic and alluring as ever with colourful houses, classic cars, music, rolling hills, cigars, faded colonial grandeur and plenty of great hiking trails. With the added extra that in Havana, Vinales and Trinidad we stay in Casas Particulares which are rooms in private houses, so you are able to truly experience the real Cuba.

  • Explore the walking trails and colonial past of rural Cuba.
  • Learn from our Cuban local guide what life is really like in Cuba.
  • Trinidad’s architecture, lush surrounds and cobbled streets.
  • Explore Old Havana the proper way - in a classic American car.

There really is only one Cuba, a slow-paced and colourful country with salsa music pulsating through its veins. It's a country rich in history, where the old and the new converge as Cuba adapts to the end of the Castro era. Change is coming slowly but inevitably; so there really is no better time to visit.

Cuba is renowned for its colourful history and from the beginning of Spanish colonial times to the present day, the island has been pivotal in global struggles. But it also offers a diversity rarely found in other countries and an old-world beauty which makes this Caribbean island so appealing.

From lush coffee and tobacco plantations around the Viñales Valley to tropical mountain forests and wildlife, and from colonial cities of Cuba's pre-revolution days to the golden sand beaches, Cuba has it all. Che Guevara murals line the walls with old men slapping down dominoes in street-lined cafes, music pulsating from every corner, and women dancing to the salsa beat while classic style 1950s cars cruise the streets.

Begin exploration with a guided walking tour through Old Havana before heading west to Viñales to visit a tobacco farm, walk in the plantation, and learn to roll a cigar. The quintessential Cuba experience!

Visit the ecological hot spot of Las Terrazas in the Sierra del Rosario mountain, before continuing east and visiting the Che Guevara mausoleum, and walking around Hanabanilla Lake and through coffee plantations.

Next is Trinidad for cultural and architectural delights in this wonderfully preserved colonial town. Walk in Topes de Collantes close by with time to enjoy a dip in fresh water pools below waterfalls. En route back to Havana stop in Cienfuegos to visit the main plaza and see the distinctive sea wall promenade. There will be a visit the Botanic Gardens. Finally, explore Old Havana in a classic American car. A classic Cuban experience.

Visit the Mausoleum of Che Guevara, who died in Bolivia in 1967, but was laid to rest in Santa Clara alongside his comrades thirty years later. The museum attached to the Mausoleum has many of his former belongings and is a fascinating insight into one of the 20th Century’s most revered icons.

After lunch head towards Hanabanilla in the Escambray Mountain Range. You will appreciate the remarkable change between the landscape of the wetland and the mountains.

Trinidad is like a town lost in time with its pastel-coloured houses and cobblestoned streets.  Trinidad was an important producer of sugar, Cuba’s “white gold” and thousands of Africans were forced into slavery to work in the fields and sugar factories, making a few landowners extremely wealthy. They made their homes in Trinidad, built churches, created lovely squares.

Accommodation

Accommodation information

Below is the accommodation featured on this holiday across all departure dates. Please refer to the Itinerary for more detail about each night's accommodation for each departure date.

Casas Particulares

We stay in Casas Particulares in Havana, Viñales and Trinidad. These are traditional Cuban guesthouses run by enterprising locals. They are effectively renting out rooms in private houses. All rooms are en suite and may be air conditioned. This is a very different experience from staying in a hotel. Most Casas have few rooms so the group will likely be split between two or three properties close by each other.

Owners pride themselves in providing a warm welcome. The experience provides a fascinating insight into local lifestyle and culture.

Every property has been inspected for client safety and comfort. Rooms are generally small with either twin or double beds. We will endeavour to ensure all clients in single occupancy will be in the same property. Many Casas are single story but some have stairs. Do not expect their to be a lift but help will be available for anyone who needs assistance with luggage. Hair dryers are very rarely supplied.

Please note the power supply in Cuba can be erratic. Havana and Trinidad are generally have more secure power supplies but more rural areas can have issues. The locals are well prepared for such eventualities, but you might be well advised to bring a torch!

Please note the photographs used are only intended to indicate the type of accommodation.

It’s worth noting that, perhaps unsurprisingly, accommodation in Cuba is unlikely to have all the usual guest safety features you might expect in more mainstream holiday destinations, particularly in the smaller and privately-owned B&B style Casas Particulares.

Hotel Moka

The Hotel Moka opened in 1994, taking elements of traditional Cuban and local architecture. With a giant tree growing straight through the lobby and a clever design which brings the outdoors in, Hotel Moka is one of Cuba’s most charming and unique properties. Intimate, romantic, and fun, it makes for a memorable stay.

Hotel Hanabanilla

Hotel Hanabanilla sits between hills and high mountains on the shores of Lake Hanabanilla in the main mountain range in the center of Cuba, the Sierra del Escambray.  It enjoys wonderful natural setting. Services include swimming pool, bar and lounge area and pleasant garden.

Hotel Los Helechos

Hotel Los Helechos is located in Topes de Collantes National Park and offers an outdoor pool and views of the garden. Guests can enjoy the hotel bar. All rooms have a TV with satellite channels and a private bathroom with a shower.
