Classic Collection

Thoughtfully designed, meticulously planned, carefully graded, and expertly guided walking tours and hiking holidays along well-loved and off-the-beaten-track footpaths.

Holiday Highlights

  • Look past the modern exterior of Hong Kong and experience the city on foot, like a local!
  • Enjoy varied walking in open countryside and along coastal paths to really understand the many faces of Hong Kong.
  • Discover unspoilt hilly countryside and outlying islands.
  • Experience the clash of British and Chinese culture.
  • Observe the buzzing harbour and illuminated evening skyline, plus ride the famous Star Ferry.

Hong Kong welcomes with an iconic skyline, varied cuisine, and lush, protected nature where rare birds and colourful traditions thrive. Come explore the hills and outlying islands, where we walk through lush open countryside and along deserted coastal paths away from the crowds.

Underneath the neon lights, glass and steel of Hong Kong’s commercial persona is a cultural landscape where its Chinese roots and colonial connections become intertwined.

Hong Kong is a beguiling place to visit; a teeming metropolis with a harbour surrounded by skyscrapers, yet with the attraction of walking trails in the backdrop of the relatively remote and unspoiled New Territories. The Chinese metropolis is full of colour: outdoor markets, shopping precincts, streets awash with illuminated signs and shops filled with exotic goods and foods from mainland China. The harbour scenes are a myriad of ferries, sampans, junks and floating restaurants. A walk to the lofty heights of Victoria Peak overlooking all of this is a must!

Beyond the maze of streets and skyscrapers lies another world of unspoilt hilly countryside and countless islands where little has changed for centuries. Numerous ferries ply these outlying islands, havens of peace far from the crowds. We’ll wander across Lantau Island to visit Tai O, a little village that seems to come out of the Middle Ages and walk on car free Lamma Island. North of Kowloon towards the border with mainland China, we come to the New Territories, protected by National Country Park status and crossed by the MacLehose Trail. The colonial Kowloon-Canton Railway gives access to mainland China – ideal for a ‘free day’ adventure (a visa is required if this option is chosen).

Hong Kong is a superb holiday destination and delivers far more than may have been imagined or believed possible. Come and experience Hong Kong with us for a new perspective.

The highest point reached on this holiday is likely to be 559m at Ma On Shan. Ascents and descents can be up to 600m. The humidity and temperature can make the walks challenging but we will proceed at a slow pace and hopefully sea breezes will cool us. Our itinerary will allow for sightseeing so you can enjoy even more of Hong Kong!

Walks & Excursions

This holiday is graded 4/L.  Note: Some walks are at the top of the Grade 4 level. Each evening the leader will discuss with you the programme for the following day.

Should you not wish to join the party, please let the leader know. Our walks will be on moderately hilly, occasionally steep terrain, with average walking times of around five hours.

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we've included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Holiday Budgeting

As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. For a rough estimate, budgeting around £10-£20 per person per day for lunches and drinks is a helpful guideline.

Currency in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Dollar. There are numerous banks in Hong Kong with ATM facilities and using your debit or credit card is a good way of accessing money whilst in Hong Kong. The hotel also accepts most major credit cards. There is generally no limit on the amount of foreign currency that can be imported or exported. Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit cards are widely used in Hong Kong.

Although entirely at your own discretion, tipping is an important aspect of tourism and hospitality life and expectations are fairly high.  In order to simplify tipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff and to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by us together with, if you wish, a contribution from you, which he/she will collect during the holiday. A suggested amount given is £30 - £40 per person.

Tour Leaders & Local Guides

Tour Leaders

Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organised they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations.  Your tour leader takes care of all the local administration, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.

Leader's Evening Briefing

Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.

12 Breakfasts and 11 dinners are included whilst in Hong Kong. Dinner on the free day is not included in the holiday cost, to provide more flexibility.  Dinners will be taken either at local restaurants in Kowloon or at the end of the day's walk.

Breakfast will be taken in the Palm Court Restaurant in the hotel. It is a magnificent buffet with everything anyone could want from fresh fruit to cereals, different breads and cakes, a hot buffet of English and Chinese food and salads.

Unsurprisingly Chinese food in all its diversity predominates on the menu. Remember the term ‘Chinese’ food is something akin to ‘European’ food and covers a huge range of cooking styles and ingredients. It will be common to order several different dishes which everybody may try. Thus, everybody should find plenty they like. As well as Chinese food we will have an opportunity to try Vietnamese, Thai, India, Turkish and western food. The food available on this holiday is as diverse as any we offer. Vegetarians will usually find plenty to choose from.

Water To Go

Opting for filtered water from a reusable bottle with its built-in water filter, like the Water-to-go bottle available at www.watertogo.eu, is a sustainable alternative to single-use sealed water bottles. Simply refill it from any water source and contribute to saving the environment from disposable plastic bottles.

Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.

As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWH17 during your order.

Additionally, our Trust invites applications for small grants from local organizations in the UK that require support for walking-oriented activities. This encompasses initiatives such as establishing footpaths and bridleways, funding for the reconstruction of bridges and refurbishing huts, and bursary funding for organisations that support individuals to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors..
