Beginning in the vibrant city of Kolkata, India, where travellers explore its rich colonial architecture, cultural landmarks, and bustling streets before flying north to Bagdogra and driving to the picturesque hill station of Darjeeling.
Known for its lush tea gardens and Himalayan views, Darjeeling offers a nostalgic ride on the historic Toy Train to Ghoom, a visit to the Railway Museum, and a scenic walk to Tiger Hill. From there, the journey continues with a drive to Chitre and a walk through the hills to Meghma, stopping at Hayden Hall to witness local craft initiatives.
The next leg leads to Kalimpong, a quieter hill town featuring Tibetan monasteries like Zang Dog Palri Fo Brang, vibrant local bazaars, and peaceful walks through traditional villages and the scenic Deolo Hills.
The trip then crosses into Bhutan via Phuentsholing, transitioning from Indian vibrancy to Bhutanese serenity. This morning you’ll dive into the vibrant chaos of Mullick Ghat Flower Market, one of Asia’s largest, where the air is filled with the scent of marigolds, roses, lotuses, and more. As you wander through the lively stalls, it's a perfect chance to capture striking street photography and experience Kolkata’s bustling trade culture firsthand. Just above, you'll see the iconic Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu), an engineering marvel that spans the Hooghly River—whether you walk across it or view it from the market, it’s a moment to remember.
Afterward, you’ll transfer to the airport for a short flight to Bagdogra in West Bengal, followed by a scenic drive up into the hills to Darjeeling, where you’ll settle in for a three-night stay. Today, you’ll board the iconic Toy Train to Ghoom, home to the highest railway station in India. The journey becomes even more special if you're lucky enough to ride behind a vintage British-built steam engine from the Raj era. Once you arrive in Ghoom, you’ll visit the Railway Museum for a fascinating look into the region’s rich rail history.
Next, you’ll take a short drive to 3rd Mile Village, where your jungle walk to Tiger Hill begins. The trek winds through the lush forests of the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, and you'll be accompanied by a forest guard due to the possible presence of Himalayan black bears. Keep your eyes open—you might also spot muntjac deer along the way. The trail starts gently but becomes steeper as you approach Tiger Hill, where you're rewarded with panoramic views of the Himalayan range. On clear days, you can see the majestic, snow-capped Kanchenjunga—the third-highest mountain in the world—and even Mount Everest in the distance. You’ll depart Darjeeling and drive about 1.5 hours to Chitre, where today’s hike begins. As you set off, the trail steadily ascends, rewarding you with breath taking views of the Kanchenjunga Range and surrounding Himalayan peaks. You’ll follow the Singalila Ridge, which runs along the border between India and Nepal, with dense forests on either side. This region is rich in biodiversity, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive red panda. This morning, you’ll drive to Durpin Hill, where the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang Monastery sits proudly at the summit. With rolling hills as its backdrop, the monastery is a place of deep spiritual importance for Buddhists—it was consecrated by the Dalai Lama and houses sacred scriptures. From a nearby viewpoint, you’ll begin your walk toward 6th Mile Village, passing through traditional hamlets, the settlement of Chebu Basti, lush rice fields, and fragrant cardamom plantations. Many of these local communities are known for their use of herbal medicine, and there’s a good chance you’ll meet a local practitioner along the way.

After breakfast you head to Deollo Hills (30 minute drive) where you begin the downhill walk. Please note- This walk is along a narrow path and with uneven steps . Along the way you will pass by animal shelters and local farmlands producing market fruits and vegetables. On arrival to Bhalu Khop you will haver the chance to visit a small flower nursery to observe rare orchids.
Depending on the opening times there may be a chance to visit Dr Grahma’s school, a charity-run school set up in 1900 by a Scottish missionary.

Today is another long travel day as you head to the capital of Bhutan, Thimphu (6 hour drive).
On arrival you will visit the Memorial Chorten, erected by the Royal Grandmother, Ashi Phutsho Choedren in memory of her son the Third King, with its golden spires, tinkling bells, and an endless procession of people circling it. In the evening you will have the chance to visit Trashichhodzong fortress. This beautiful medieval fortress is Bhutan's administrative and religious centre which houses the governor's offices and the King's Throne Room.

You’ll begin your walk to Cheri Dorjidhen Monastery from the small village of Dodena. The trail starts by crossing a covered cantilever bridge over the Wang Chu River, then winds upward through pine and fir forests along a switchback path to the monastery. Cheri Monastery is a sacred site that holds the remains of Tempi Nima, the father of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the Bearded Lama who unified Bhutan in the 17th century. Inside, you’ll find beautiful frescoes depicting Buddhist saints. This monastery was home to Bhutan’s first monastic community and remains an important teaching centre of the Drukpa Kagyu sect.
Afterward, you’ll visit the National Institute of Zorig Chusum, where students learn traditional Bhutanese arts such as drawing, painting, calligraphy, embroidery, wood carving, and sculpture—art forms deeply connected to Buddhism and quite different from Western styles. You’ll also explore the Textile & Folk Heritage Museum. In the evening, you’ll have the chance to experience the lively Centenary Farmers Market.

Today, you’ll visit Kuensel Phodrang, home to the Great Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, standing an impressive 169 feet (51.5 meters) tall. From here, you’ll enjoy a stunning bird’s-eye view of Thimphu city. Next, you’ll explore Dochula Monastery, built as a tribute to the service and leadership of His Majesty the King. As you descend toward Punakha, you’ll be surrounded by vibrant prayer flags, terraced farms, and scenic river landscapes. Afterward, you’ll drive about an hour to the beautiful Paro Valley, famous for its many sacred sites. Just north of town, the Taktsang Palphug Monastery, famously known as Tiger’s Nest, clings dramatically to a cliff above the forested valley. Nearby are the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, a 17th-century defensive fortress. You’ll also visit Rinpung Dzong in Paro before enjoying the rest of the day at your leisure.

This morning, you’ll drive about 30 minutes to Ramthanka, where your hike begins to one of Bhutan’s most revered pilgrimage sites, the Taktshang Lhakhang, also known as the "Tiger’s Nest" Monastery. The trek treats you to breath taking views of this sacred monastery perched dramatically on a sheer rock face, 3,000 feet above the valley floor. According to legend, Guru Rimpoche, the father of Bhutan’s Mahayana Buddhism, arrived in the Paro Valley over a thousand years ago riding on the back of a tigress. He meditated for three months in a cave here, which was later transformed into the monastery. Along the way, you’ll hear only the soft murmurs of wind and water, and the distant chanting of monks. The hike from the base to the cafeteria takes about an hour and a half, followed by roughly another hour’s trek through stunning landscapes to reach the monastery itself.
On your return to town, you’ll visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples, dating back to the 7th century. The original temple was built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, and in 1968, Her Majesty Ashi Kesang, the Queen Mother of Bhutan, constructed a second temple modelled after the original. The rest of your day is free to relax before dinner.

This is the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, where you can pay respects to her tomb visit her modest room and view personal belongings that reflect her life of service and humility.

The highest walking we plan to do on this holiday will generally be around 3000m. On arrival in Paro (2100m) we have time to acclimatise to the altitude.
There will be days on the tour where the sightseeing element will fill most of the day and our excursions can vary from half a day to a full day. Although walking will make up a substantial part of the sightseeing programme, there will be days which focus on the walking element of the programme. The walks will not be too strenuous over a prolonged period, parts may be on uneven ground, muddy or dusty, according to the weather, with only the occasional steep section or rough path. Some of the sites we visit may include a good number of steps.
Please note it is not guaranteed to visit Tiger Hill In Darjeeling at the time of sunrise due to local restrictions, if not visited at sunrise you will visit another time in the day.

A passport is required to visit India and it must be valid for a minimum of six months from your intended return to the UK. It is necessary to have at least two blank pages in your passport to allow for a visa to be inserted. A visa is required for entry into India. You can apply for an e-visa for India between 30 days and 3 days prior to the date of arrival in India. The visa is double entry and will be valid for 30 days from date of arrival. The visa cost as of Mar 2023 was US$25. Please note this price changes regularly with no prior notice from the Indians.
You will need to complete the online form and it is necessary to upload a copy of the photo page from your passport, with all information showing clearly, plus a recent front facing photograph. Malaria is present throughout the year in India; please seek advice from your doctor or travel clinic.
Dengue fever, Zika virus and Chikungunya virus exist in India; please take normal precautions against mosquito bites.
Seek pre-travel Zika virus advice from your health care provider 6-8 weeks in advance of travel, particularly important if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
Air Pollution
Cities may at times experience periods of poor air quality. If you suffer from a respiratory condition you may wish to seek advice from your doctor prior to travel.
Diarrhoea & Boiled Water
Don’t forget to exercise caution with what you eat to avoid upset stomachs and stay away from unpeeled fruit and vegetables, salad and do not have ice in your drinks. Hot, fresh cooked food, where possible, is best.
Hand washing facilities may be poor or unavailable when travelling, we therefore strongly advise you to carry antibacterial sanitizing gel and / or hand wipes at all times and use to them regularly.
Drinking or cleaning teeth in un-boiled water is not recommended. Bottled pure water is inexpensive and widely available in shops, at hotels, and on the coach. Make sure you only buy sealed bottles.

You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.
It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.
The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.
Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.
If you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.
If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you are unable to demonstrate that you are insured.
If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland, please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card).
