Malta's history is layered into every walk we take here. We'll lead you through Valletta, whose Grand Harbour has witnessed everything from the arrival of St Paul to the siege that earned the entire island the George Cross, a unique honour you can see displayed on the city's streets. The fortifications of Fort Angelo and the honey-coloured limestone of the old town reflect centuries of Knights, sieges and seafaring, while the curious mix of Arabic-rooted language and unmistakably British touches, red telephone boxes among golden Mediterranean stone, gives Malta a character unlike anywhere else we visit.
Beyond the cities, we'll take you across a landscape shaped by centuries of careful farming: terraced fields, dry stone walls and lush valleys that contrast beautifully with Malta's rocky, sun-baked uplands. Crossing to Gozo, the pace slows further still. Here the table-top hills and quiet rural lanes offer a gentler, more pastoral side of the archipelago, and our small groups make it easy to take it all in without ever feeling rushed. Walking between the two islands in one holiday gives you a genuinely rounded picture of this small but endlessly storied corner of the Mediterranean.
Sliema is a lively coastal town on Malta's northeast coast, known for its seafront promenade, ferry connections across to Valletta, and a mix of shopping, dining and waterfront living that makes it one of the island's most popular bases for visitors.
