After breakfast, you begin your scenic drive toward the western and southwestern parts of the Indus Valley. At the spectacular confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers near Nimmu, you’ll cross the Indus and continue along the stunning Zanskar River for about thirty minutes. Nimmu is a strikingly beautiful valley where the lifeline of Ladakh—the Indus River—meets the powerful Zanskar River, which flows in from the northeast.

Your trek starts amidst peaceful willow groves, leading you on a gentle one-and-a-half-hour walk to Sumda Chun, a remote and pristine village tucked away in the mountains. This hidden gem is home to the 1,000-year-old Sumda Chun Monastery, rarely visited by tourists. The monastery is believed to have been founded during the era of Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo (957–1055), the great translator and Buddhist master.

Sumda Chun remained without electricity until August 2017 and is home to just around 120 residents. The trail ascends westward through a narrow gorge along the left bank of a stream. Eventually, it crosses to the right bank, passing a few isolated homes. The track then splits—one side leading to Sumda Chenmo, the other guiding you through a gorge to Sumda Chun Monastery. As you walk beside the stream lined with willow trees, the monastery gradually comes into view, sitting gracefully above the village.

Reaching the lake involves a short uphill hike of around 150 meters, but the reward is worth every step.

With crystal-clear water and peaceful surroundings, Yarab Tso offers a chance to pause, reflect, and soak in the pure beauty and stillness of Ladakh. Sit by the lake, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and reconnect with the simple joys of life.

Once settled into your lakeside hotel, you’ll enjoy a gentle walk along the tranquil shores of Pangong Lake. Pangong Tso, meaning “High Grassland Lake,” is located at an altitude of 4,350 meters, making it the highest saltwater lake in the world. One of its most captivating features is its ability to change colours 4–5 times a day, shifting between deep blue, turquoise, and green, depending on the angle of the sun and the sky’s reflection.

As you walk through the rugged terrain, you’ll pass by nomadic settlements, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of Ladakh’s few remaining traditional herder families. These seasonal camps, dotted with simple tents and surrounded by grazing herds of yaks, sheep, and goats, represent a lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Take the opportunity to interact with local nomads, learning about their seasonal migrations, daily routines, and centuries-old knowledge of the land. It’s a chance to connect deeply with the cultural soul of Ladakh, far from the usual tourist trail.

After returning to the lake, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch with stunning lake views, rounding off a day filled with nature and culture.

India Modest Dress

As in most Asian countries, modesty of dress is sensible.  Very short shorts are considered improper in some areas and women should exercise caution when exposing the upper arms or shoulders as this can cause offence. A lightweight shawl can be a useful item for women.  Men should also dress modestly, long trousers and a loose shirt are often more acceptable than shorts and a T-shirt.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In addition, the Trust makes many small grants to local organisations such as Ramblers Groups, Walkers are Welcome, My kind of Books and recently provided a small grant, via his scouting group, to enable a young man whose family had fallen on hard times to complete his DofE Gold award.

Patron of the Trust is the renowned explorer, Mark Wood. Over 20 years Mark has undertaken expeditions to some of the most remote parts of our planet. Our shared values make for an exciting partnership, and we believe that by standing shoulder to shoulder we can encourage people from all communities to enjoy being active outdoors in whatever way suits them best.
