Our holiday walking grades

A relaxing way to explore, where we’ve perfected the art of taking our time. You don’t need to be a seasoned walker or fit enough to walk for miles to join these itineraries. All trips at this grade are in our Adagio Collection where our focus is on quality time. We encourage everyone to pause and take in their surroundings, strolling on foot at a leisurely pace.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 3 miles; Ascent/Descent 50m; Terrain: good paths and tracks; Time: Over the duration of a day.

This level mixes active sightseeing with shorter, city or countryside walks. Trips are not aimed at seasoned walkers, but you should be confident in managing walks of around 3miles at a leisurely pace with a few ups and downs. Where in more mountainous areas we use transport to access higher ground with ease.  Holidays graded at this level are generally in our Adagio or Discover Collections.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 3 miles; Ascent/Descent 150-200m; Terrain: good paths and tracks; Time: Short or Half Day exploration.

We still class this level as leisurely; walks are generally a little longer than level 2, with undulations but over a longer distance. Where sightseeing distances are longer, we take a full day with opportunities to stop, rest and refuel. Generally, itineraries involve easy countryside walking with plenty of breaks,

Usual daily walks - Distance: 4 miles; Ascent/Descent 300m; Terrain: generally good paths and tracks; Walking Time: Half Day or Full Day walks.

Usually, your walk will take up the whole day at a moderate pace. Terrain will often be hilly and paths generally good. Note that on holidays in mountainous areas, expect some rougher paths. An average walk length is 6 miles but expect this to vary from as little as 3 miles on a sightseeing day and up to 10 miles on a full day dependant on the amount of ascent and decent required.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 6 miles; Ascent/Descent 500m; Terrain: sometimes hilly and undulating on good paths and tracks; Walking Time: Day walks.

Trips comprise of day walks with plenty of ups and downs, some steep and rough ground will be encountered at times and walks averaging 7 miles with 650m of ascent / descent. Some holidays will cover longer distances on easier paths, others will be shorter walks but have more demanding ascents and terrain.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 7 miles; Ascent/Descent 650m; Terrain: generally decent paths and tracks with some steeper sections; Walking Time: Day walks.

Full day walks with appreciable amounts of ascent and descent and longer distances covered.  Whilst you will be mainly on paths, these may be rough, steep, and loose at times. We take the whole day to enjoy some fabulous walks.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 8 miles; Ascent/Descent 850m; Terrain: sometimes rough, loose or steep sections; Walking Time: 8hrs / Full Day walks.

These holidays are typically in mountainous areas where stamina is important to be able to enjoy longer days. There is plenty of ascent and descent on some rough and steep paths that require good footwear, a steady foot, and a good head for heights. Some days may be shorter in distance or ascent/descent, but the overall effort levels required are of a higher nature.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 10 miles; Ascent/Descent 950m; Terrain: varied with rough, rocky and steep sections; Walking Time: 8hrs+ / Long Days.

Our most challenging trips - hard mountain walking with long rewarding ascents, descents and maybe some scrambling. A good level of fitness, stamina, head for heights and experience of mountain walking is essential.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 11 miles; Ascent/Descent 1300m; Terrain: varied with rough, rocky and steep trails; Walking Time: 8hrs+ / Long Days.

2 Walks, 2 Leaders, 2 Grades

On a number of holidays we provide two tour leaders, and offer a choice of easier and harder walks each day. These itineraries, with 2 Walks, 2 Leaders, 2 Grades, offer a greater degree of flexibility. We hope to be able to accommodate your choice of walk; on most departures we are able to accommodate most clients' first choice of walk most of the time. However, some flexibility and co-operation may be required. For safety reasons, the minimum number of participants on a walk will be four, plus a leader. Note too, in unusual circumstance, where a disproportionately high number of clients wish to walk at one grade, for safety reasons, we may not be able to provide you with your choice of walk each day. Any decision regarding group sizes and the participants in the day's walking programme rests with our tour leaders.

Your holiday, your way.

On a Ramble Worldwide holiday it doesn’t matter where you want to go or what your preferred style of walking is – we have a holiday to suit. Whether you want to bound across the countryside, stroll along a scenic coastal path, head for the hills for an energetic hike, or tackle a combination of different walks, we have holidays to match all moods and abilities. Be sure to check the individual holiday information sheet for more details of the walking grade and specific walks you might do on each holiday.

We divide our holidays into four basic types, with eight different grades.

Leisurely Holidays - Grades 2-3

Feel the sun on your face as you tour the magical canals of Venice, discovering tucked-away treasures and iconic landmarks. Amble around the villages of the Lake District, stopping off for a sumptuous slice of cake and a warming hot drink. Taste the local vintages as you visit award-winning Bodegas in the Alpujarras. Or set out on a journey of solace and spirituality as you explore the paradise islands of Indonesia. Our Leisurely holidays are just perfect for when you want to linger a little longer, while taking in city sights and scenic landscapes. Or you could try one of our Adagio Holidays if you'd like to explore at a more gentle pace.

Walking Holidays at a Moderate Pace - Grades 4 & 5

Look out to stunning sea views as you follow remote coastal paths in Majorca. Meander through flower-filled meadows in Madeira. Explore moorlands shrouded in mystery in the Peak District. Breathe in the scent of lavender as you hike the wild coast of the Caribbean, or catch your breath as you stand beside a mountain tarn in Morocco. Our Moderate holidays are great for those who love to ramble in the great outdoors.

Challenging Walking Holidays - Grades 6-8

Test yourself as you scramble across spectacular ridges in the Lake District. Revel in a sense of achievement as you stand atop Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain peak. Peer out across a snow capped Alpine range in the heart of the Dolomites. Or take on a demanding hike over steep and tough terrain in the Balkans or Andorra. Our Challenging holidays will suit those who enjoy an energetic pace and exhilarating views.

For your safety and comfort, it’s vital that you bring proper outdoor clothing and footwear appropriate to the nature of your holiday and well as choosing a holiday appropriate to your fitness levels and capability. Our holidays include everything from sightseeing the cultural cities of Europe to high altitude trekking and mountain hutting, on all continents and in all seasons. If appropriate, we provide more additional detailed information on clothing specific to your chosen holiday in our Holiday Information Sheets, downloadable from the individual holiday pages.
