New Zealand is home to a wide variety of great walks. The Milford Track is often hailed as the most beautiful walk in the country. Stretching through Fiordland National Park, it offers stunning views of waterfalls, alpine scenery, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear rivers, culminating at the breathtaking Milford Sound.
The best time to go hiking in New Zealand is during the spring (October-November) and summer (December-February) months. The weather is mild, with longer daylight hours and clearer trails. These seasons offer fantastic conditions for exploring New Zealand’s scenic landscapes.
Natural beauty is everywhere you look in New Zealand, however, Fiordland, in the southwest, is often considered the most scenic part of the country. Home to breathtaking landscapes like Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound, it features dramatic fjords, towering cliffs, native forests, and pristine lakes. Other attractive locations include Tongariro National Park, Mount Cook, and Abel Tasman National Park.
Due to New Zealand’s epic landscapes and the sheer amount to see and do, we recommend spending two to three weeks in the country. Anything less than this would mean rushing from one destination to another or missing out on locations. By spending a few weeks exploring on foot, you can really experience all that New Zealand has to offer.
