  • The rugged, untamed island of Gozo

The first rainfall after the long, hot summer transforms the landscape, awakening an impressive abundance of wildflowers. From mid-October to about mid-May, the Islands become green and vibrant. Fields are filled with vegetables, and roadsides are lined with fennel, clover, wild iris, myrtle, and countless other plants. By late spring, over a thousand species of flowers are in bloom. Beyond the resorts and the more urban parts of central Malta lies a surprising expanse of countryside, much of it largely untouched. In fact, only about one-fifth of the Maltese Islands is urbanised. Many farmers continue to work the land using traditional, labour-intensive methods, and village life still follows the rhythms of the agricultural and fishing seasons.

The Islands provide walkers with some of the most breath-taking scenery in the Mediterranean. Along your route, you may encounter ancient prehistoric ruins, cave chapels, and hidden palaces once belonging to the Knights. The whole island of Gozo is superb for walking. Areas such as Ta’ Dbieġi near San Lawrenz, the Ġordan Lighthouse by Għasri, and the Salt Pans close to Marsalforn all offer wonderful routes to explore. With a web of tracks and country lanes criss-crossing the island, the walking opportunities are truly endless.
