Overview
Tuscany, famed for its hilltop villages, rolling landscapes, olive groves and vineyards, is criss-crossed by ancient pathways and medieval pilgrimage routes. This region is home to Chianti wines, cypress lined country roads and forests of oak, beech, and chestnut. The gently rolling scenery offers sweeping views across vineyards and fields of sunflowers to San Gimignano and beyond.
We’ll follow sections of the Via Francigena, a pilgrimage trail from Canterbury to Rome (the route was first documented in 876 AD), explore the Chianti region as our trail winds around the sedate Tuscan landscape around Greve, where we enjoy wine tasting with a view, and we’ll explore the charismatic town of Siena with its glorious Renaissance architecture.
Our holiday is centred around the well known segments of the Pilgrimage route the Via Francigena. On two days we follow the route in and out of San Gimignano, the town has been given UNESCO status and it is easy to see why, it is known as the Town of Fine Towers, with its well-preserved buildings and churches, main piazza and a wonderful local flair.
