Most long-distance paths in Europe and the UK are best walked from spring to autumn when weather conditions are more favourable. Spring brings wildflowers along many routes, while autumn offers crisp, clear days perfect for photography. The West Highland Way and Hadrian's Wall are particularly beautiful in May and June, while the Camiño de Santiago is popular in April, May, June, September and October.
Good walking boots are essential for long-distance trails, as is layered clothing to adapt to changing weather conditions. Walking poles can provide welcome support on longer days. For self-guided holidays, navigation tools like maps and compasses may be necessary, though we provide detailed route notes. On longer routes, consider lightweight, quick-drying clothing that can be easily washed and dried overnight.
Our long-distance walking holidays range from moderate (Grade 4-5) to challenging (Grade 6-8). Most require a reasonable level of fitness and walking stamina, as you'll typically be walking for several hours each day, often over consecutive days. Routes like the West Highland Way can involve walking up to 14 miles per day, while others like Hadrian's Wall average 8-10 miles daily.
