Overview
Discover the natural beauty and rich history of Jersey on this centre-based walking holiday, covering approximately 80 km (49 miles) of the Channel Island Way – a scenic long-distance walking trail that spans 177 km (110 miles) across the accessible Channel Islands in the English Channel.
Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, offers a perfect blend of stunning coastal scenery, historic landmarks, and a mild maritime climate ideal for walking holidays. Once part of the Duchy of Normandy, the islands were granted to the English Crown by William the Conqueror and have remained under British sovereignty, though politically distinct as a Bailiwick – a self-governing territory under the Crown. Each island has its own unique charm, often compared to the most picturesque parts of Cornwall.
Jersey has long been a favourite destination for discerning travellers seeking a mix of natural beauty, history, and tranquillity. You'll walk along golden sandy beaches, dramatic cliff paths, and discover hidden coves filled with sparkling rock pools. In spring and early summer, the cliffs burst into colour with blooming sea pinks, gorse, and trefoils, creating a truly unforgettable walking experience.
The island is also steeped in history, with forts and castles dotting the coastline, many dating from the 15th to 19th centuries. Notably, Jersey also bears the marks of World War II, with large-scale Nazi fortifications still visible from their occupation of the islands.
Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy North Jersey, a key stop on important migratory routes, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.
Whether you're drawn by the scenery, the heritage, or the solitude of coastal walking, Jersey offers an exceptional experience for walkers of all levels.

The Jersey Tidal Trail is a captivating 48-mile coastal route that invites you to explore the island’s ever-changing shoreline. Each section reveals something new – from dramatic tidal shifts and striking sea cliffs to vibrant wildlife, centuries of history, and the island’s distinctive blend of British and French culture.

Ascent/Descent
Today’s route offers a walk of two distinct halves. Starting from St. Helier, you’ll follow the waterfront past marinas and modern developments. At low tide, you can choose to walk along the expansive beach, or stay on the coastal promenade, passing the imposing Elizabeth Castle and stretching along golden sands to the charming village of St. Aubin—once Jersey’s main harbour.
After a well-earned break, the route heads inland and uphill to the dramatic cliffs of Noirmont Point, home to well-preserved Nazi fortifications from World War II. The path then continues along scenic cliff tops to beautiful St. Brélade’s Bay, one of Jersey’s most beloved beaches, where you’ll find a historic parish church and the medieval Fishermen’s Chapel nestled at the edge of the sand.
The trail then winds westward to La Corbière, Jersey’s iconic lighthouse perched at the island’s southwestern tip, offering sweeping ocean views—Newfoundland lies just 2,475 miles beyond the horizon! From here, you’ll round the corner and finish the day at the southern end of St. Ouen’s Bay, once again met by miles of sweeping beach. Relax at a beach café before returning to St. Helier by bus (approx. 45 minutes, depending on traffic).

Ascent/Descent
Unless the tide is particularly high, you can begin the day walking directly on the wide, golden sands of St. Ouen’s Bay, covering the first few kilometres along the shoreline with uninterrupted views westward across the Atlantic—Canada lies over 3,000 miles away.
If the tide, weather, or personal preference keeps you off the beach, an alternative route follows the sea wall path, which offers its own points of interest. Along the way, you’ll pass a small nature reserve home to several of Jersey’s native species, a number of historic defensive towers, and the Channel Islands Military Museum, housed in a former Nazi bunker filled with fascinating wartime artefacts.
At the far end of the bay, the landscape shifts as you climb into cliffs blanketed with heather and gorse. Skirting a remote headland, you'll walk through an area managed to reduce the spread of bracken—helping to preserve habitat for nesting birds.
The cliff path continues to a well-preserved German range-finding tower, then leads to the atmospheric ruins of Le Château de Gros Nez, a medieval fortification perched high above the sea. The trail then descends past the secluded beach of La Grève de Lanchon and meanders beside coastal farmland before reaching your final stop: the picturesque and sheltered La Grève de Lecq, another of Jersey’s inviting sandy bays.
Return to St. Helier by bus (approx. 40 minutes, depending on traffic).

Ascent/Descent
This is arguably the most challenging—but also the most breathtaking—section of the walk. While there are a few miles on tarmac, the majority of the route follows rugged coastal footpaths that wind up and down around the coves, bays, and dramatic cliffs of northern Jersey.
The scenery is spectacular, especially in clear weather, with sweeping views across the sea to Guernsey, Herm, Sark, Alderney, and even the coast of France. Along the way, you’ll encounter tidal reefs and swirling currents, historic forts and watchtowers, and paths lined with heather, gorse, butterflies, and abundant birdlife.
This part of the island feels more remote and wild than previous sections. Aside from the charming harbour of Bonne Nuit and a couple of welcoming pubs, there’s little in the way of development—just pure, unspoiled nature.
Geology enthusiasts will enjoy features like sea stacks and the dramatic Devil’s Hole, a collapsed sea cave steeped in local legend. The route includes some steeper ascents and descents, making it a more demanding hike, but one that rewards you with unforgettable views and a deep sense of accomplishment.
Though the path stays comfortably inland from the cliff edge, the terrain is rugged in places and can feel exposed depending on conditions. With luck, the wind will be at your back.
Return to St. Helier by bus (approx. 50 minutes, depending on traffic).

Ascent/Descent
Today’s walk continues through some of Jersey’s most scenic coastline, rounding the island’s north eastern tip and beginning the journey south. From Bouley Bay, the dramatic cliff paths resume, leading you to the quaint harbour village of Rozel, nestled in a sheltered cove.
Leaving Rozel, the route transitions to peaceful inland lanes before descending into the serene Bay of Fiquet, and then onto the expansive St. Catherine’s Bay via a long breakwater. This is a perfect spot to pause for a refreshing ice cream and, if the tide is low, to return briefly to beach walking.
As the trail continues, you’ll pass several historic coastal towers, remnants of Jersey’s defensive past. The final stretch follows the headland road into Gorey, home to the majestic Mont Orgueil Castle. Towering above the bay, this medieval fortress is exceptionally well-preserved, and it's well worth spending up to two hours exploring its winding staircases, towers, and ancient chambers.
Your day ends in the charming fishing village of Gorey, nestled at the foot of the castle—a picture-perfect finish to a varied and rewarding walk.
Return to St. Helier by bus (approx. 30 minutes, depending on traffic).

Ascent/Descent
On this final leg of your journey, it’s possible—at low tide—to walk much of the way from Gorey to St. Helier along the beaches. The walk begins with a scenic stretch where Mont Orgueil Castle slowly fades into the distance across sand and sea, passing the historic Fort Henry along the way.
While large sections of beach are walkable, some rocky, weedy areas, private land, and impassable headlands mean you'll occasionally switch to the coastal road or promenade. As you progress westward, the coastline becomes increasingly developed, with stretches of seawall, dunes, and coastal road walking taking you through some of Jersey’s more residential and lively areas.
Highlights along this route include the sweeping sands of the Royal Bay of Grouville, the quaint harbour at Platte Rocque, and the Havre de Pas Lido—a historic tidal swimming pool where, tide permitting, a refreshing dip may be in order (don’t forget your swimwear!).
You'll also pass several of the island’s iconic defensive towers, standing watch along the coast. Eventually, the path brings you full circle to Liberation Square in the heart of St. Helier, completing your rewarding island-wide walking adventure.

Holiday Budgeting
As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. If your holiday does not include dinners (see itinerary) we recommend budgeting an additional £25-30 per day.
Tipping
Tips are not included in the holiday price. Although entirely at your own discretion, tipping is an important aspect of tourism and hospitality life and expectations are fairly high. We strongly recommend when receiving good service you make a tip to the local supplier.
