Turtle Love in Oman

Andrew Burns | Wed 26 Jan 2011

Oman Adventure – 8th November – 20th November

Day 9 of our Holiday – we’ve seen tacky but interesting Dubai – Camel Markets, Wadis and traditional villages a plenty. We’ve stayed in a desert camp under a blanket of stars and seen some outstanding views from “Diana’s viewpoint.” But none of this compares to our night out this evening.

After dinner we are driven in our now second homes – air conditioned 4 by 4s – to a local beach to join hundreds of other people for what I understand is a popular nightly show; tickets must be purchased weeks in advance, and the star turns are not even guaranteed to turn up.

Tonight they showed up and performed a faultless show. We saw these Green Turtles, which are monitored and protected along this coastline, crawl up the beach, dig holes, lay hundreds of eggs and we saw newly hatched turtles rushing to dip their first flipper in the sea.

To be as close as I am to this keyboard, to these rare and beautiful creatures, was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

After this we spent 2 days in Muscat, including a Dhow cruise, but nothing compared to the headline act. We’re already talking about how to go back to friendly Oman, or at the very least how to adopt a turtle.
