Holiday Highlights

  • Take contrasting walks; from historic sites and panoramic coastal views in Malta, to the green and very beautiful farm-land, hills and valleys of Gozo.
  • Opportunities for swimming in idyllic bays.
  • Discover the islands’ dramatic history.
  • Step back in time amongst the bustling streets of Valletta, European Capital of Culture 2018.
  • Experience the timeless atmosphere of Mdina, ‘the silent city’.
  • Enjoy walks from Buskett Gardens to the megalithic temple at Hager Qim.

As you walk the picturesque coast of Malta, your senses are captivated by the mesmerizing hues of the sea, where shades of turquoise blend seamlessly into deep blues. Inland, our paths meander through the rocky landscapes of the Maltese lowlands, where aromatic shrubs like thyme flourish in the sparse soil, creating a haven for busy bees.

Our journey through Malta unfolds in a series of scenic and enjoyable walks, with the magnificent Mediterranean Sea or charming rural towns and villages serving as the perfect backdrops for your holiday photographs. On the other hand, Gozo, in stark contrast, offers a lush and tranquil setting with fewer bustling towns. Its fertile farmlands yield melons, grapes, vegetables, and fruits, while its coastline is characterized by pristine white-washed cliffs and rugged tracks. From the hillside vantage points, you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the entire Maltese archipelago. Each day, the landscape transitions from verdant farmlands adorned with patches of vibrant yellow flowers to dramatic rocky bays, ensuring an ever-changing and captivating experience.

Our Christmas and New Year departures are a chance to see in the festive season in a different setting and although swimming is still available, the water temperature will be considerably colder than other departure dates.

This medieval walled town is the old capital of the island and has earned the name ‘Silent City’, as only the cars of residents are allowed inside.  You will be free to wander through the maze of streets and alleyways and appreciate the very fine buildings and churches.

On your way back to our hotel you will stop off to look at Mosta Church.   The dome is the third largest in Europe and in WWII a bomb pierced it and landed in the packed church but didn’t explode.

This tower, built in the reign of Grand Master Lascaris in 1649, was manned during both World Wars and commands extensive views to Gozo and Comino.   From here you walk back to your hotel passing Mellieha Bay, where you might be tempted to pause for a swim, from this popular beach.

St Thomas Bay, Marsaxlokk & Valletta

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Distance

    3.7 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

You drive to the south east coast of Malta to begin your morning walk from St Thomas’s Bay.  This cliff top walk will take you past a number of splendid bays and finish in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, Malta’s second largest natural harbour.   It was here that the Ottoman Turks landed for their attack which became known as the Great Siege of 1565.

From here you will transfer to the islands capital Valletta, built by the Knights of St John in the 16th C,  you will have the afternoon to take in the many sights this historic city has to offer with a local guide.  If you wish to spend the whole of this day in Valletta that can be easily arranged.

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Distance

    8 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

This walk takes you to the south west of the island and starts at Buskett Gardens, a former hunting ground of the Knights, and home to Verdala Palce, the summer residence of the President of Malta. Leaving the gardens you head for ‘Clapham Junction’, so called because of a complex network of tracks gouged in the rocks. Close by are cave dwellings occupied, possibly from pre historic times, until 1835 when the British administration re settled the residents.

Heading up to the high point of Laferla Cross for extensive views before dropping down to the coast and your visit to the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, built 3600 to 3000BC.  There will be free time to visit the temples and visitor centre.

Victoria to Xaghra

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Distance

    10 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

Gozo awaits you to explore as you walk from your hotel, along the coast, before heading inland towards the islands capital Victoria.  You will have free time to visit the Citadel, first fortified during the Bronze Age and then a wander through Rabat, suburb of the walled city, and have lunch.  You regroup and start the moderate ascent to Xaghra which boasts one of Gozo’s most important archaeological sites, Ggantija.  The temples here date from 3600-3200BC and it was once thought that giants built them as some of the megaliths exceed 5 metres in height.  You leave the temples and walk back through pleasant countryside back to Marsalforn.

Day 8

Santa Lucia, the North Coast and Marsalforn

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Distance

    10.5 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

The walk stars today in the village of Santa Lucia and from here you head to the west coast of Gozo.  On your way you pass by Dwejra Tower, built by Grand Master Lascaris, and then down to the Inland Sea, a lagoon connected to the Mediterranean by a natural archway.  Ypu will have free time to see the site of the once famed ‘Azure Window’ which collapsed into the see in 2017 and take the short boat trip through the natural arch, and out to sea and back.

From here you have a moderate ascent heading to the sleepy villages of San Lawrenz and Għarb where you have the option of visiting the sanctuary of Ta Pinu a centre of religious devotion. You then head for the north coast where from, a safe distance, You can view the sea through a rock cut arch. You head east along the coast, passing salt pans which mainly date from the 19th C but salt on Gozo has been produced since Roman times, and back to Marsalforn.

This walk is towards the top end of the grade however there is a convenient public bus should you wish to cut the walk short. Just have a chat with your leader.

Day 9

Xlendi to Mgarr:

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Distance

    8.5 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

Across the island from Marsalforn is the fishing Village of Xlendi, which is where you start todays walk.  You follow the inlet away from the village, pass by the tower which stands guard at the entrance and then walk through an area of small cultivated fields back to the cliff tops.  A good path takes you along the tops giving you really good views of some of the highest cliffs in Gozo.

You head inland through the village of Sannat and then towards the south coast with views to Malta and Comino before heading down to a small inlet, where you can pause for a quick swim and then lunch.  The route now follows the coastline again and a short steep ascent to Fort Chambray before dropping down to the ferry port of Mgarr and your ride back to Marsalforn.

Day 10

Qala, Dahlet Qorrot and Ramla Bay

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Distance

    7 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

A short transfer to the east of the island takes you to Qala where you start your walk from the parish church and down to your first bay Dahlet Qorrot. Splendid views all around as you approach this small attractive bay.  You then head uphill and under the cliffs, around the headland, through farmland.  You climb up again through cultivated land and down to Ramla Bay to find a delightful and popular beach where you have time for a quick swim followed by lunch. Passports and Visas

European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

All breakfasts are taken at your hotels and are from a wide buffet selection.

Lunches are packed and brought for by yourselves. Every walker likes something different for lunch so there are plenty of bakeries and supermarkets close to our hotels in which to buy what you need. Sometimes our leader might know of a good little coffee shop to stop at for a lunch time snack.

Dinners are in the hotel.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

Our house broker MPI should be considered for whom we are an affiliate and contact information is on our website and will be referred to in your booking confirmation.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.

Cultural Awareness

Responsible Travel

We are dedicated to promoting responsible travel practices that prioritise the well-being of both the environment and local communities. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimize our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible. Our walking tours are designed to immerse participants in the local culture, fostering meaningful connections with the communities we visit. We strive to leave a positive impact by engaging in responsible tourism activities, respecting local customs, and contributing to the preservation of natural landscapes. Through our commitment to responsible travel, we aim to create enriching experiences for our guests while actively contributing to the conservation of the destinations we explore.

The Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust

Unlike many other tour operators, we take pride in our unique approach. Ramble Worldwide channels its surplus profits back into various outdoor, walking-related, or environmental conservation projects in the UK through our own trust. When you choose us, you contribute to this impactful initiative.

The primary focus of our Trust's financial support is directed towards Britain's premier walking charity, The Ramblers. They play a crucial role in advocating the benefits and significance of walking to the British public. Additionally, our Trust invites applications for small grants from local organizations in the UK that require support for walking-oriented activities. This encompasses initiatives such as establishing footpaths and bridleways, funding for the reconstruction of bridges and refurbishing huts, and bursary funding for organisations that support individuals to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors..

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.
