After departing Liverpool, several days at sea provide a relaxed introduction to life onboard, allowing you to settle in and enjoy the ship’s facilities as Borealis sails south towards warmer waters. These early days set an unhurried tone before the walking programme begins in the Azores, an archipelago shaped by volcanic activity and lush vegetation.

Your first walking destination is Praia da Vitória on Terceira Island. Here, a guided hike to Monte Brasil introduces you to the Azores’ unique blend of coastal scenery and volcanic terrain. Elevated viewpoints reveal sweeping views over the harbour and Atlantic Ocean, offering a striking first impression of the islands’ natural beauty.

The journey continues to São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, where two full days allow for deeper exploration. A hiking tour to Serra Devassa and the Nascente do Canário takes you into a landscape of crater lakes, forests and rolling hills, showcasing the island’s volcanic origins. Today you arrive in the Azores, an archipelago shaped by volcanic forces and surrounded by the vast Atlantic. Your first walking experience takes place on Terceira, an island known for its fertile landscapes and historic settlements. After disembarking, you travel to the start point for a guided hike to Monte Brasil, a volcanic peninsula that rises above Praia da Vitória.

The walk follows well‑defined paths through green countryside and volcanic terrain, gradually ascending to higher ground. As you climb, views open out across the harbour, the town below and the deep blue ocean beyond, offering a striking introduction to the Azores. The pace is steady and manageable, allowing time to enjoy the scenery and learn more about the island’s geology and history. After completing the walk, you return to Praia da Vitória and rejoin Borealis, having gained your first impressions of the islands’ dramatic natural character.

Arriving on São Miguel, the largest and most diverse of the Azorean islands, today’s walk takes you into the island’s volcanic interior. Travelling inland from Ponta Delgada, you reach the Serra Devassa region, an area defined by crater lakes, rolling hills and dense vegetation.

The guided hike passes through forested trails and open viewpoints, revealing a landscape shaped by ancient eruptions and now softened by lush greenery. Borealis (Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines)

Bearing a name that was previously bestowed on an Olsen-owned vessel in the 1940s, and inspires thoughts of the Aurora Borealis, elegant Borealis proudly connects with, and represents, the Fred Olsen's Norwegian heritage. Stylish, spacious and comfortable, with capacity for fewer than 1,400 guests, she’s in keeping with their commitment to offering a more traditional style of cruising.

But while Borealis’ capacity is smaller than many cruise vessels, she’s still one of the largest ships, by size, in the Fred Olsen fleet. On board Borealis you’ll find you’re never overcrowded. There is always ample room in which to indulge yourself in the stylish dining venues, enjoy a glass of your favourite drink and fantastic entertainment at the bars, lounges and theatres and enjoy time at the all-season pool. And of course, with friendly staff providing an excellent personal and attentive service, there’s an intimate feel to the on board experience too.

Walks & Excursions

The described walks assume that the weather will be good and that the ship will keep to the planned schedule. We may have to change the walks if the ship’s schedule changes or there is poor weather.

Sometimes the ship may need to anchor at a port of call. This means a tender needs to be used to reach port. Your Captain will advise when a tender service will be required.

Fred Olsen asks that you take your passport with you when you leave the ship to explore on shore.

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we have included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Fred Olsen Paying On Board

The currency on board ship is sterling. A credit account system is operated onboard allowing bar drinks, wine in restaurants, laundry charges, purchases from the shop and any other incidental expenses to be automatically charged to your account. You will be required to register a debit or credit card at check-in against which to charge your onboard account. At the time of writing there is no charge for payment by credit or debit card. Onboard accounts can be settled in cash, however, a debit or credit card must still be registered at check-in to secure the on-board account balance.

The following credit cards are accepted: Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa. Fred. Olsen also accepts Visa debit cards but is unable to accept American Express, Solo, and Electron, travel agent debit cards or traveller’s cheque cards.

The ship operates a Bureau de Change onboard, where currency can be purchased or sold subject to local currency restrictions. All major currencies are stocked based on the cruise destinations with no commission charge and competitive rates.

Currency in Portugal

The currency in Portugal is the euro. We recommend you take some euro cash with you until you reach an ATM as credit cards may not be accepted in some towns and rural areas so please ensure you always have cash with you.

Tipping

Your cruise holiday price includes all ship, driver and where applicable, local guide tips. You can, should you wish, tip more at your discretion for any service provider who has gone above and beyond to make your holiday special.

Embarkation

On arrival at the port you will need to produce both your ticket and a valid passport, so please ensure you have both ready to hand. When checking in you will be issued with your ship’s pass and boarding card. Your ship’s pass acts as your security pass and onboard account card for the full duration of the cruise. Each time you embark or disembark the ship your card will be swiped to record whether you are on board or ashore. In addition, your hand luggage may be subject to either x-ray scanning or a manual search each time you re-join the ship.

Disembarkation

At least 24 hours before the end of your cruise the full disembarkation instructions will be placed inside your cabin. Please ensure you have settled all onboard accounts before leaving the ship.

You have the choice to depart with your luggage on the morning of disembarkation or leave your luggage outside your cabin door on the final night of your cruise holiday. Your luggage will be collected and transferred to the cruise terminal for you on disembarkation, you can collect it as you depart the ship, making for a stress-free disembarkation. If you decide to do this, then we recommend bringing an overnight bag for toiletries, pyjamas, and a spare change of clothes.

Portugal Passport 2026

The new EU Entry/Exit system has been rolled out across all applicable countries. For Portugal 72 hours prior to travelling should you wish to, you can complete some of this information before you travel.

Whilst you will still need to go through border checks and passport control, pre completion of the questionnaire may help ease waiting times at the overseas airport. European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Throughout the day, complimentary tea and coffee stations are available, typically in the informal café. While additional beverages are available for purchase, the prices are reasonable. Please note that alcoholic drinks bought ashore cannot be brought on board for consumption during the cruise.

For those with specific dietary needs such as diabetic, gluten/wheat-free, dairy-free/soya, vegetarian, vegan, or low-fat preferences, please inform us at the time of booking or no later than 14 weeks before departure. Your culinary experience on board is designed to be as delightful as your journey at sea.

2026 onwards - Fred Olsen Cruise Lines will include selected house beer, wine by the glass and draught soft drinks with lunch and dinner in selected venues on board. 

Footwear & Kit List

Footwear

Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good, moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

Cruising Attire

Daywear

Daytime wear is casual with comfortable shoes for walking around deck. A lightweight jacket or coat is recommended for the early evening when the sun sets. You may also like to take a towel and swimwear as the Fred Olsen ships have small swimming pools and Jacuzzis. Towels are provided at the poolside should you forget your own. During the day casual wear is allowed in the restaurant but not swimwear.

Evening attire

During your cruise, there will be formal and smart casual evenings. On formal evenings, gentlemen are encouraged to wear ‘black tie’, although a dark suit and tie will suffice, with ladies elegantly dressed in cocktail or evening dress. On smart casual evenings, men can wear open-necked shirts, chinos and dark coloured jeans, and women dress or trousers and a top.

Staying Healthy On Holiday

Health requirements in destination can change, and it's crucial for you to take responsibility in staying informed. Ensure that you consult a professionally qualified source and comply with any health requirements at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure. Your GP can provide advice on vaccinations. Stay proactive about your health preparations to ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience.

Health Advice for Portugal

No compulsory immunisations are required for visits to Portugal. 

You should be up to date with the usual immunisations recommended in the UK. 

You may wish to consider immunisations against Tetanus. 

Dengue fever exists in Portugal; please take normal precautions against mosquito bites.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). EHIC & GHIC Cards

Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.

This includes the prohibition of plastic straws, cocktail sticks, stirrers, cutlery, and take-away coffee cups. The officers and crew consistently explore ways to further minimize plastic usage. All waste is meticulously collected, sorted, and discharged by the ship's staff in adherence to stringent environmental regulations. This waste is then responsibly processed onshore by approved recycling and receiving operators. It's important to note that the only waste discharged at sea consists of commuted food waste and wastewater. Your cruise experience is designed with a commitment to environmental responsibility.
