On this hiking weekend in Andalucía, explore the beguiling Alpujarras, a hidden gem in Southern Spain’s Sierra Nevada valleys.
What does this mean?
Overview
Uncover the secrets of the Alpujarras Valleys, hidden in the heart of Andalucia on this thrilling weekend adventure in Spain. The land and life here have changed little since the Moors tended the terraces many centuries ago and you’ll get great insights into local life in Los Pueblos Blancos, the six traditional, whitewashed villages in the area that cling precariously to the slopes.
Based in the picturesque village of Capileira, surrounded by great peaks, you’re perfectly placed to explore fragrant terraced orchards, vineyards and shady olive groves. Seasonal wildflowers, almond-scented breezes and fresh autumnal fruits make the region impossible to resist.
Begin your weekend with a hike high on the slopes of Mulhacen, at 3,479m the highest mountain in Iberia. Following a forest path you’ll climb to a lofty viewpoint; on a clear day you might see the Rif Mountains in Morocco even! A long climb will then bring you to the remote alpine refuge of Poqueira where you’re more likely to encounter ibex than other people; bask in the majesty of the surroundings with the upper slopes of Mulhacen and the Poqueira gorge close by.
On your second day, from the front door of your rustic finca, step onto a trail that links Los Pueblos Blancos. Soak up the countryside and stunning views of the Sierra Nevada mountains before discovering the Moorish architecture and individual character of each village, with a glimpse into the traditional Alpujarran way of life.
