Magical Madeira: Our guide to Portugal's best-kept secret

Ramble Worldwide | Fri 15 Jul 2022

The archipelago of Madeira sits proudly in the Atlantic Ocean. These four islands off the coast of Africa benefit from a warm subtropical climate with diverse volcanic terrain. A beautiful destination for walking year-round, we’ve created this brief blog post about Madeira to guide you on your next adventure here.

Madeira’s meals

The cuisine of this autonomous nation is a true treat for the tastebuds. It may not come as a surprise that seafood is prominently featured on the menu. Chicharros fritos (a small fried fish), castanhetas, trout and octopus are found in many restaurants across the islands.

Grilled steak sandwiches and skewers of beef are traditional dishes, tantalising visitors with their smokey flavours. Or, if you’re looking for some sustenance, the soups of Madeira are iconic. Tomato soup adorned with a poached egg is a particular speciality, as well as the denser, warming wheat soup which is packed with vegetables. Both of these options make an excellent choice for vegetarians visiting the islands.

Of course, Madeira is famed for its namesake wine. For those visiting, trying this fortified tipple is a must. Even if you haven’t previously sipped on a glass directly, you likely will have tried Madeira wine, as it’s a common ingredient in many French dishes, such as Madeira sauce. Madeira wine ranges from sweet to dry and boasts an indulgent taste.

Walking in Madeira

It is impossible to mention Madeira without crediting its perfect walking landscape. Luscious greenery and colourful wildflowers carpet the clifftops which overlook the terracotta-tiled traditional buildings.

The terrain boasts its own charisma, carved into shape by its volcanic past. All of this is pleasantly accompanied by the agreeable climate that makes walking here comfortable, even on the tougher routes.

The south has a drier climate, with the north relatively wetter. There is so much diversity here for a small island, and the well-trod walking routes make navigating it nice and straightforward.

Madeira’s beaches

When taking a break in the warm sunshine, the perfect complement is a dip in the ocean. It may come as no surprise that these islands are home to numerous beaches. While exploring this island, you will also discover that there are distinctive differences between beaches.

You can find black volcanic shale beaches with blue water lapping at their shores – a stunning and unique geological site. On the other hand, there are pristine white sand beaches, complete with the comforts of sun loungers and umbrellas. Secluded peninsulas also offer peaceful vistas and privacy.
