Ramblers in NY

Peter Taylor | Tue 11 May 2010

On the transfer from JFK we discovered that New Yorkers have traffic jams, weekend road-works and traffic accidents. This led to a slow scenic tour, with some nice views of Manhattan.

Central Park is only a few blocks from the hotel and the activities there are many and varied. It’s strange to think that the rolling landscape was ’built’ from the earth excavated when the Subway was constructed.

The HUGE breakfasts available in the diner next door, starting with pancakes, maple syrup and bacon set us up for the day. Definitely need to walk them off! The “best buy of the week” was the Metrocard, giving unlimited travel on the Subway and buses.

Trying to ‘do’ everything is exhausting, so you need to pace yourself.

A highlight for me was the train ride up the Hudson River leaving from the magnificent Grand Central Station. This was followed by a country walk in true Ramblers style. Even better was free entry to a US stately home on production of my National Trust card.

No sign of “energy saving “, when NY is viewed from the Top of the Rock at 11.00pm, so no need to feel guilty over an old fashioned 60 watt bulb! Times Square looked minute from this height.

Be prepared for all weathers, we had a range from 40o to 91o and sun, wind and rain all in one week…..
