This winter snowshoeing cruise is a robust and physically active Arctic adventure, combining Fred. Olsen’s small‑ship cruising with demanding snowshoe routes in some of Norway’s most dramatic winter landscapes. Designed for fit and experienced walkers, the itinerary focuses on sustained snowshoe ascents, exposed mountain terrain and full winter conditions, offering an immersive way to explore the Arctic on foot.

After sailing north from Southampton, the Norwegian coast comes into view at Ålesund, where a winter walk introduces snowy urban paths and elevated viewpoints. Crossing the Arctic Circle marks a clear transition into harsher landscapes, colder temperatures and true Arctic scenery.

Narvik forms the core of the snowshoeing programme. A full‑day excursion into Swedish Lapland explores the open valleys and frozen terrain of Abisko, Katterjokk and Björkliden, with time for short walks, viewpoints and extended outdoor exposure. This is followed by a demanding fjord‑side snowshoe ascent near Narvik, where participants are introduced to snowshoe technique before climbing through pristine winter terrain. We spend the morning discovering the remote village of Eidfjord, located in the impressive Hardangerfjord, at 179km in length it is the second longest fjord in Norway with a maximum depth of more than 800m! Eidjord is a quiet village surrounded by incredible scenery, with steep mountains and deep blue fjords, verdant valleys and glacial rivers, thundering waterfalls, and distant glaciers…Eidfjord is a nature lovers paradise. 

We follow a picturesque trail from Eidfjord to a scenic turquoise lake, passing a unique Viking cemetery on the way. We’ll be surrounded by panoramic views full of mesmerising natural wonders.

A memorable milestone as the ship crosses the Arctic Circle. Snow‑covered mountains and remote coastlines dominate the view as you enter true Arctic Norway, with harsher conditions and dramatic scenery setting the tone for the days ahead.

Narvik & Swedish Lapland

Having cruised most of the way along the dramatic Naeroyfjord and Gudvangen, we reach the small alpine village of Olden, encircled by towering mountains and deep fjords. 

We take transport up the Olden valley to start a scenic walk towards the snout of either the Brennsdal or Briksdal Glaciers, small arms of the mighty Jostedals Glacier, the largest glacier in mainland Europe. The walk is quite steep but can be taken slowly – the panoramic mountain views at the top are magnificent! 

Today you venture beyond Norway and deep into Swedish Lapland on a full‑day Arctic journey that reveals some of the most expansive winter landscapes of the region. Leaving Narvik, you travel east towards the Swedish border, where the scenery opens out into wide mountain valleys, frozen rivers and snow‑covered tundra.

The route takes you through Katterjokk, Abisko and Björkliden, areas renowned for their raw beauty and dramatic winter light. Along the way, regular stops allow time to step out into the landscape, take short walks and absorb the scale and stillness of the Arctic environment. Highlights include views of frozen lakes, mountain backdrops and the impressive Abisko canyon, carved by water and ice and transformed by winter conditions.

This is a day focused on immersion rather than speed — travelling slowly through vast terrain, pausing where the scenery demands attention, and experiencing the feeling of true remoteness that defines Lapland in winter. With time for photography, gentle exploration and warming breaks, the day offers a powerful contrast to life on board.

You return to Narvik in the late afternoon, having crossed borders and landscapes, and with a deeper understanding of the Arctic world you are now travelling through.

Narvik Snowshoeing

Today brings one of the defining experiences of the cruise: a guided snowshoe expedition in the mountains rising directly from the fjord near Narvik. After meeting your local guides, snowshoes and poles are fitted and you receive clear instruction before setting out, ensuring everyone is confident on the snow.

The route climbs steadily through pristine Arctic scenery, combining forested slopes and open mountainside with ever‑changing views across the fjord below. Snow‑covered peaks, frozen waterways and vast winter silence create a powerful sense of place, and there is always the chance of spotting Arctic wildlife such as hares or moose along the way.

After the ascent, effort is rewarded with a traditional Norwegian winter picnic enjoyed outdoors beside a warming bonfire. Simple, hearty local fare and hot drinks provide a welcome pause, allowing time to absorb the landscape and share stories before beginning the return journey.

Today’s snowshoe adventure takes place in the hills above Harstad, offering wide‑ranging views across fjords, islands and snow‑covered mountains. After meeting your local guides and being fitted with snowshoes, you set out into the winter landscape, leaving the town behind surprisingly quickly as the terrain becomes open and wild.

The route climbs steadily through snow‑covered ground, with the pace set to allow time to appreciate the surroundings. As you gain height, views open out across the archipelago, with distant peaks and frozen waterways creating a classic Arctic panorama. The area is known for its quiet beauty, and the sense of space and stillness is a defining feature of the day.

Along the way, your guides share insight into the local landscape, winter conditions and life in northern Norway. There is time to pause, take photographs and enjoy the scenery before beginning the descent back towards Harstad.

Embarkation

On arrival at the port you will need to produce both your ticket and a valid passport, so please ensure you have both ready to hand. When checking in you will be issued with your ship’s pass and boarding card. Your ship’s pass acts as your security pass and onboard account card for the full duration of the cruise. Each time you embark or disembark the ship your card will be swiped to record whether you are on board or ashore. In addition, your hand luggage may be subject to either x-ray scanning or a manual search each time you re-join the ship.

Disembarkation

At least 24 hours before the end of your cruise the full disembarkation instructions will be placed inside your cabin. Please ensure you have settled all onboard accounts before leaving the ship.

Balmoral (Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines)

Our cruise ship is the Balmoral, which can accommodate a maximum of 1325 passengers with 520 crew. The ship offers an intimate, homely atmosphere and the combination of Balmoral's comfortable cabins, excellent cuisine, friendly attentive crew and the onboard facilities are second to none.  

Facilities include two swimming pools, a fitness centre including a sauna, steam room and beauty salon, two sun decks, Jacuzzis, several lounges and bars, a card room, library, internet room and several restaurants. The ship has a medical centre for any on board emergencies and boutique shops where you can buy essentials such as sun cream or toiletries. There is also a self service laundrette and ironing room. 

The main restaurant is The Ballindalloch (named after the Speyside village and castle), while the two other formal restaurants - Avon and Spey - are also in keeping with the Scottish theme and are named after two of Scotland's most beautiful salmon rivers. There's a comfy pub with occasional live music or comedy, the evening shows take place in the Neptune Lounge and you can enjoy a drink with spectacular seascapes in the Observatory Lounge. 

Our accommodation is twin and single cabins with shower and toilet. All cabins are equipped with individually controlled air-conditioning, television, hairdryers, tea and coffee making facilities and a safety deposit box. Balmoral has a non-smoking policy on board and smoking is not permitted in any cabin. Allocated cabins will be an inside cabin (normally on the Main or Atlantic Deck) unless you have paid a supplement to upgrade. Those booking single cabins may not necessarily be allocated a twin cabin for sole use. Your cabin steward will keep your cabin in immaculate condition throughout your stay, replacing any linen or towels when required. Separate towels are provided for poolside use. Balmoral operates a satellite telephone system, with telephones in each cabin, and personal mobile phones enabled for international roaming should work on board, depending on your location.

The voltage on board the Balmoral is supplied at 220 volts (requiring a continental style 2-pin plug). If you are in any doubt as to the appropriate voltage to use your electrical appliances on board, please check with the ship’s Reception Desk. Adapters can be bought at the ship’s shop.

Walks & Excursions

The described walks assume that the weather will be good and that the ship will keep to the planned schedule. We may have to change the walks if the ship’s schedule changes or there is poor weather.

Sometimes the ship may need to anchor at a port of call. This means a tender needs to be used to reach port. Your Captain will advise when a tender service will be required.

Fred Olsen asks that you take your passport with you when you leave the ship to explore on shore.

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we have included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Fred Olsen Paying On Board

The currency on board ship is sterling. A credit account system is operated onboard allowing bar drinks, wine in restaurants, laundry charges, purchases from the shop and any other incidental expenses to be automatically charged to your account. You will be required to register a debit or credit card at check-in against which to charge your onboard account. At the time of writing there is no charge for payment by credit or debit card. Onboard accounts can be settled in cash, however, a debit or credit card must still be registered at check-in to secure the on-board account balance.

The following credit cards are accepted: Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa. Fred. Olsen also accepts Visa debit cards but is unable to accept American Express, Solo, and Electron, travel agent debit cards or traveller’s cheque cards.

The ship operates a Bureau de Change onboard, where currency can be purchased or sold subject to local currency restrictions. All major currencies are stocked based on the cruise destinations with no commission charge and competitive rates.

Currency in Norway

The currency used in Norway is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Norway is a virtually cash free country, so we recommend bringing very little cash with you. ATMs are widely available in most of Norway’s cities, towns and villages.

Tipping

In your holiday price, we've included tipping for our local suppliers, covering hotel and restaurant staff, local guides, and drivers. Should you wish to make an extra contribution for a specific service, this should be given directly to the recipient at your discretion.

Leader's Evening Briefing

Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.

Booking Your Own Travel Arrangements

If you prefer to arrange your own flights from a non-UK or regional airport or travel to your holiday destination by rail or car, you may qualify for 'land only' reductions, and we can provide details upon request. Feel free to reach out to us for more information.

Before finalizing any independent travel arrangements, especially if you're doing so 12 weeks or more before your intended travel date, please check with us first to ensure your holiday has been cleared to operate. If you plan to join your holiday locally, kindly inform us at least 14 weeks in advance.

If you're joining and leaving your holiday overseas, we assume, unless you specify otherwise, that you will join and leave the holiday at your hotel.

Although airport/station transfers are not included for those making independent travel arrangements, you may have the option to join the group at the overseas airport/station, depending on your arrival time. If interested, contact us at least 5 weeks before departure for more details.

Please be aware that you must arrive within 30 minutes of the group flight/train arrival to be eligible for the group transfer. Additionally, we'll need your flight number, arrival time, and departure point or independent travel arrangements to ensure the group leader can meet up with you. If you have a mobile, please ensure we have the number, and it is turned on while you are traveling for effective communication.

Hotel Transfers

When you book a flight or rail inclusive holiday, transfers between the airport/station and hotel and back are included. On some holidays, where we offer various flight options, the transfer vehicle may wait for all flights to land before transferring to the hotel.

Passports and Visas

European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Footwear & Kit List

Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good, moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

Electricity on Board

All of the cruise ships feature 2-pin (round pin) Continental style plug (220 volt-60 Hz) and Bolette will also feature UK plug sockets.

Bolette, Borealis and Balmoral also feature the American-style 110 volt plug.

We recommend you bring adaptors on board, but if you forget, these can be borrowed from the Guest Services desk when on board, or purchased from the ship's Port Shop.

Staying Healthy On Holiday

Health requirements in destination can change, and it's crucial for you to take responsibility in staying informed. Ensure that you consult a professionally qualified source and comply with any health requirements at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure. Your GP can provide advice on vaccinations. Stay proactive about your health preparations to ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience.

Health Advice for Norway

No compulsory immunisations are required for visits to Norway.

You should be up to date with the usual immunisations recommended in the UK.

You may wish to consider immunisations against Tetanus and Tick-borne Encephalitis. Tick-borne Encephalitis immunisation is not applicable in winter.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses, mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

If you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you are unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland, please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.

EHIC & GHIC Cards

Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
