Walking grade

Grade 4

This is a grade 4 snowshoeing holiday where you’ll strap on a pair of snowshoes and walk off-piste into a beautiful wilderness out of bounds to skiers. You can expect full and half days of walking. The full days can be up to 5 hours of walking whereas the half day walks can be 3 hours. On some days we may offer a longer morning and a shorter afternoon walk if possible, the latter providing either more snowshoeing or else in boots with ice/snow grippers. Some of the walks are at the top end of the holiday grade because it takes more energy to cover snowy mountain terrain on snowshoes than when summer walking, but it’s worth it!

The highest point normally reached on this holiday is 1770m at the spectacularly located Sonnalm Mountain Restaurant and in the Korbersee area.

Paths are snow covered and can be icy or steeper in places, but manageable with your snowshoes. Our routes take us through meadows and woodland areas, some along the valley and some climbing through forest onto the high meadows to give marvellous views. Some clients may prefer to use an optional cable car up or down the mountainside on one of our walks.

Discover Collection

Meticulously curated, guided walking holiday itineraries that delve into the culture, wildlife, cuisine, and rich history of the world.

Overview

Holiday Highlights

  • Reach high alpine slopes that are inaccessible with just boots – walking on good tracks and going ‘off-piste’.
  • Take in glorious views of Körbersee and the surrounding mountains.
  • Follow the Lech valley to Stockach and Holzgau with opportunities for lunches in cosy local bars.
  • Walk through silent forests and across open pastures to beautiful viewpoints including the Hängebrücke suspension footbridge.
  • Enjoy an evening walk lit by flaming torches followed by glühwein.
  • Take lunch stops in alpine ‘hüttes’ with the best winter views.

Embark on a magical 7-night snowshoeing holiday in Austria in the picturesque alpine village of Bach, nestled in the heart of the Lechtal Alps. This winter adventure invites you to immerse yourself in snow-covered fir forests, charming alpine villages, cosy log fires, and the heartwarming aroma of traditional glühwein.

Bach is located in northern Tirol, perfectly positioned between the Lechtal Alps to the south and the Allgäu Alps to the north. Sitting at just over 1,000 meters above sea level, it’s surrounded by towering peaks rising to over 2,500 meters – a paradise for lovers of winter hiking and snowshoeing.

During your stay, you'll explore scenic snow-covered meadows and spruce woods, including a breathtaking walk to the Wasealm Hut with panoramic views up the Griess valley. You’ll also enjoy an unforgettable route between the Kabelsee and Körbersee lakes – a landscape often described as “walking through hills covered in icing sugar.” Other guided snowshoe walks may take you along the picturesque ‘Panoramaweg’ above Bach or to the Sonnalm Hütte, framed by snow-capped peaks.

Your expert guides, including the knowledgeable hotel manager and a second experienced local snowshoe leader, will tailor each day’s route to the best snow and weather conditions. They’ll ensure you get the most out of your guided snowshoeing experience in the Alps.

As a guest, you’ll benefit from the ‘Lechtal Aktiv Card,’ offering free bus travel throughout the valley, adding convenience to your alpine escape. While snow is not always guaranteed, these trails remain stunning whether on snowshoes or wearing sturdy hiking boots with ice grips.

Please remember that this itinerary serves as a guide. Each day's plan is adapted to current weather and trail conditions, ensuring your Austrian winter holiday is both safe and memorable.

Accommodation

Today is usually the local guide’s day off. Because we want to maximise opportunities according to the weather conditions, if the weather is ideal today, your Ramble Worldwide tour leader may lead the walk to Körbersee (see below), rather than leaving it to later in the week. The Körbersee walk is a highlight of the week and we suggest not to be missed!

Whilst we have chosen Bach im Lechtal for the excellent snowshoe walking on offer, other winter sports are available in the area. Your Ramble Worldwide leader will describe various options and if the Körbersee walk is offered today, then you might prefer prioritising a snowshoe-free option, as outlined below, on a different day – the choice will be yours.

Other winter sports available in the Bach area:

Winter walking – many of the summer hiking trails are prepared for winter walking. Whilst most of these are in the valleys, some go as high as mountain huts. There are three mountain huts around Bach, which are open in the winter, and these make good winter walking destinations using poles and wearing your ice grippers on your boots.

Cross country (‘XC’) skiing – there are 120km (80 miles) of prepared XC ‘Loipen’, one of which goes past the hotel and local maps are available. Many of the others can be accessed using the free bus in the valley between Steeg about 12km (8 miles) to the west and Forschach about 25km (16 miles) to the northeast.

Downhill skiing - there is one cable car in Bach, which gives access to a blue and a red downhill ski run (cable car not included in the free bus pass). The nearest extensive downhill skiing is about 25km (16 miles) to the west near Warth which has 17 ski lifts. There is a free ski-bus to Warth which takes about 25 minutes. The road to Lech am Arlberg is closed in the winter.

Please note that these other winter sports activities are not included as a part of your holiday nor can we take any part in organising them. If you would like to take part in any of them you need to make sure you have adequate insurance and make your own arrangements locally.

Day 6

Holzgau and the Hangebrucke

Meals

Breakfast & Dinner

Accommodation

  • Time

    7 hours

  • Distance

    4.5 miles

This walk is along fairly level paths and off-piste through meadows to the beautiful village of Holzgau. Then we climb up through pastures and on good tracks to the 200m long suspended walkway 100m above the stream.  We return to the village for lunch and then explore the woods and pastures further up the valley before returning by bus to the hotel.

Day 7

Körbersee

Meals

Breakfast & Dinner

Accommodation

  • Time

    4 to 5 hours

  • Distance

    6 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    200/300m

We catch a bus to the Salober ski lift, then start the walk at nearly 1700m. We walk past the Kabelsee lake to the Körbersee lake with the option to walk around the latter and explore the adjacent slopes. After lunch we head back to Käbelsee and Salober, with a possible extension to Jageralpe.  before catching the bus back to the hotel.

Or if we did the Körbersee walk earlier in the week, the local guide may lead us on a walk up to Sonnalm. This is a sometimes challenging uphill and downhill walk beside the ski pistes with lunch at the Sonnalm Hutte at 1770m. This is around 4.5 hours of walking with an ascent and descent of 600 metres, and could make a challenging but satisfying end to our week.

Passports and Visas

European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Meals

Breakfasts and dinners are included in the holiday charge and will be taken at the hotel.    The hotel provides a large buffet breakfast including muesli, a large selection of breads and local specialities. There are 4 courses at dinner including a large salad buffet. The menus choices always include one vegetarian option.

Unfortunately, the hotel is currently unable to cater for strict vegan diets. Please contact us for the latest information if this will be an issue for you.

Lunches are not included but we hope to enjoy them in the wonderful mountain restaurants.

Footwear & Kit List

Footwear

Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good, moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

Outdoor activities are always safer and more enjoyable if you are prepared.

If you have not travelled with us before the following list might be of use:

Further Travel Advice

For further advice please visit:

You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

If you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you are unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland, please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.

EHIC & GHIC Cards

Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.

For more information, please visit www.nhs.uk/ehic

Personal Safety

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is your go-to for the latest info on security, local laws, and the nitty-gritty of passports and visas at www.gov.uk/travelaware. Make sure to take a quick peek at the current advice for your upcoming destination—it'll only take a few minutes.

When you're out and about, stay aware of your surroundings. Take smart precautions with your credit cards and passport, and maybe tone down the flashy accessories.
