Overview
Cambridge sits within the flat landscapes of Cambridgeshire and the Fens. Though small, it is rich in history, with the University’s famous colleges shaping its skyline.
Your base is the Cambridge Belfry Hotel in Cambourne, a modern village 10 miles west of Cambridge. From here, we’ll enjoy winter walks and visit some of East Anglia’s finest National Trust sites, including Wimpole Hall, Anglesey Abbey, and the wetlands of Wicken Fen. We’ll also explore Cambridge itself, approaching the city on foot from Grantchester, and visit the University’s beautiful Botanic Garden.
Our first day takes us to the Wimpole Estate for a scenic walk, with optional entry to the festively decorated Hall (NT membership or fee required). In the afternoon, we head to Cambridge for the final open day of the University Botanic Garden before Christmas, with its Winter Garden, giant redwoods, and warm glasshouses.
On Christmas Eve, we start in Grantchester and walk along the River Cam through its famous meadows before exploring Cambridge’s historic streets and riverside colleges. Christmas Day features a relaxed walk from the hotel through the local nature reserve, learning how Cambourne was developed with wildlife in mind, followed by Christmas lunch and an afternoon at leisure. On Boxing Day, we visit Anglesey Abbey and then Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve, where we may witness flocks of birds returning to roost at dusk.
All private transport is included. National Trust admissions are not, so please bring your membership card if you have one. While entry isn’t required for all walks, it can enhance your experience.

Ascent/Descent
After breakfast, we will take our private transport to Wimpole Estate.
The Wimpole Estate comprising 2,000 acres has an impressive 17th century hall, spacious parkland, beautiful cultivated gardens and a unique working farm with rare-breeds.
Our morning walk will explore some of the public footpaths (free access) around the estate. Those who wish can visit the Hall, bedecked in its festive finery throughout, Home Farm or Gardens (NT membership cards, otherwise entrance fee payable).

Ascent/Descent
Our day will start at Grantchester, one-time home to the war poet Rupert Brooke and also the backdrop for the ITV crime drama series ‘Grantchester’.
We take the well-trodden path from the village, following the River Cam across Grantchester Meadows - which inspired Chaucer and Rupert Brooke as well as being the subject of a Pink Floyd song! We walk through Newnham then cross the meadows of Lammas Land and Coe Fen to reach Cambridge. Here we will wend our way to the city centre past King’s College Chapel, the venue for Christmas Eve’s ‘Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols’ broadcast worldwide by the BBC.
After a lunch break around King’s Parade, we will enjoy a short walking tour of some key sites around the west of the city, seeing colleges such as Trinity, St John’s and King’s College. There should be a little free time at the end of the afternoon (perhaps a chance for a Christmas Eve festive drink at a hostelry such as the Eagle on Bene’t Street where in 1953 Crick and Watson declared they had ‘discovered the secret of life’?) We will then walk across the River Cam to meet our transport on the famous ‘Backs’ for return to our hotel.

Ascent/Descent
Merry Christmas!
After breakfast, we will work up our appetites before Christmas lunch with a walk around the village of Cambourne, taking in its small lakes and nature reserve. Cambourne, one of Cambridgeshire’s new villages built 25 years ago, is the home to the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. The new village was designed to accommodate and enhance wildlife and biodiversity. The nature reserve is home to badgers, deer and great crested newts!
We return to the hotel for a sumptuous Christmas lunch, and the afternoon and evening will be free time for you to enjoy the festivities.

Ascent/Descent
We drive to Anglesey Abbey, situated NE of Cambridge. Anglesey Abbey is a beautiful Jacobean-style house full of rich history, from a monastic priory to a family home. We will have an opportunity to see an 18th century watermill still with its traditional machinery. The gardens at Anglesey Abbey are extensive and include a stunning winter garden.
Your leader will lead you on a three mile walk encircling the 114 acre grounds (there will be an opportunity for those wanting to go into the Abbey to opt out part way through the walk). Everyone will get chance to visit the open-access café, gift shop, second-hand bookshop and plant stall, and those with NT cards and those wishing to pay the entry fee can head into the gardens / Abbey if they wish. (Please note the cost of entrance to the whole Anglesey Abbey site is not included in the cost of the holiday; free for NT members.
After lunch, we continue by private transport to Wicken Fen, the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve and now a National Nature Reserve. It is one of Europe’s most important wetlands with deep peat soils, sedge and reedbeds. The wetlands are home to more than 9,000 species, including Konik ponies, cattle, birds and rare plants! Winter is a crucial time for the Fen – when the many native birds are joined by birds from wider Europe.
Independent departure from the hotel after breakfast. Check out is by 11am
We hope you enjoyed your Christmas break and wish you a very happy New Year.

Local Transport Costs
In the holiday cost, we have included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.
Optional Excursions
At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.
The gentle terrain of the Cambridge area means our daily ascents and descents will not exceed 50 m. Paths are generally good although some mud can be expected! There will be some walking on minor roads and in the city of Cambridge.
Holiday Budgeting
As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. For a rough estimate, budgeting around £10-£20 per person per day for lunches and drinks is a helpful guideline.
Tipping
In your holiday price, we've included tipping for our local suppliers, covering hotel and restaurant staff, local guides, and drivers. Should you wish to make an extra contribution for a specific service, this should be given directly to the recipient at your discretion.
Tour Leaders
Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organised they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations. Your tour leader takes care of all the local administration, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.
Leader's Evening Briefing
Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.
