Overview
Discover the Allerdale Ramble: A Unique Journey Through the Lake District & Solway Coast
The English Lake District and the Solway Coast together create one of the most stunning and varied walking landscapes in the country. The Allerdale Ramble offers a 54-mile journey that showcases this beauty, taking you through rolling sand dunes, stretches of England’s coastal footpath, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), and alongside Bassenthwaite Lake - the only National Nature Reserve lake in the Lake District.
The Allerdale Ramble was first devised in 1976 by Harry Appleyard in a modest 16-page booklet. Later guides followed, including Fred Harper’s 40-page version in 1986 and Jim Watson’s detailed book The Cumbria Way and the Allerdale Ramble in 1997. Despite this, the route remains unmarked and is not officially recognised by Ordnance Survey as a long-distance path - making it refreshingly quiet and far from over-walked.
Over six days, this holiday explores some of the most quintessential landscapes of historic Cumberland, offering striking contrasts along the way. You will encounter expansive marshlands and a Second World War observation post before continuing to the characterful seaside town of Silloth. From here the route leads through rolling sand dunes where you may come across Belted Galloway cows, which help manage the habitat and encourage natural reseeding. The flora and fauna of this area are second to none and provide a constant source of interest as you walk.
Along the way there are opportunities to visit a Roman museum and fortlet, a traditional sea salt factory, Mirehouse stately home, a Mountain Rescue centre, and even the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Each day combines beautiful scenery with fascinating heritage, making every step memorable.
The Allerdale Ramble is perfectly suited for those who enjoy gentler walking, with paths that allow you to savour both the landscapes and the history without strenuous effort. For walkers seeking quiet beauty, rich heritage and authentic Cumbrian charm, this holiday is a rewarding experience that will not disappoint.
