Accommodation
Arrive into Riyadh, one of the world’s wealthiest cities, exemplifies modern Saudi Arabia. Once a walled mud-brick stopover along desert trade routes, it has transformed into a cutting-edge metropolis, home to some of the country’s finest hotels and restaurants. The city’s orderly grid is dotted with over 4,000 mosques, bustling shopping centers, traditional souks, public parks, and a rich variety of neighborhoods and communities.

Meals
This morning, depart the capital by air for Tabuk, the gateway to Saudi Arabia’s northwest and historically a resting point for Jordanian and Egyptian pilgrims traveling to Mecca and Medina. Upon arrival, head off on an off-road journey into the Hisma Desert enroute to your camp. Travel from Tabuk to NEOM, the recently named area in the country’s northwest. The Hisma Desert, also known as Bajda or Hesmi, is arguably the most scenic part of the region, with its uninhabited expanses of yellow-red sands and dramatic rock formations.
Board 4x4 vehicles to traverse rugged terrain into the heart of the Hisma Desert, a striking landscape of towering sandstone cliffs and wide-open valleys. Upon arrival at the remote desert camp, settle into your wild campsite surrounded by impressive rock faces. After a brief orientation and time to soak in the sunset, the afternoon continues with an expedition briefing. Enjoy a traditional dinner under the stars, followed by stargazing and quiet reflection in the serene desert night.

After an early breakfast and packing up camp, the journey continues on foot deeper into the Hisma Desert. Today’s full day trek spans roughly 13 kilometres over 6 to 7 hours, crossing a mix of sandy plateaus, red dunes, and rocky paths. Along the way, you’ll pass through wide valleys, weathered sandstone ridges, and areas adorned with ancient inscriptions and natural rock arches.
A midday pause in the shade of the rocks allows for a simple field lunch. The day concludes with a sunset arrival at Camp 2, where a new wild campsite is set up. Dinner is enjoyed under the open desert sky, followed by a restful night in the tranquillity of the remote landscape.

Ascent/Descent
The day begins with an early start and immediate progress across open desert landscapes. The pace increases as the route crosses soft sand flats and ascends steadily into granite-strewn hills. Traversing rocky ridgelines and weathered stone towers, the group gains elevation while covering roughly 10 kilometres of demanding terrain.
Following a midday rest and picnic lunch in a shaded rock alcove, the final stretch continues into a secluded valley enclosed by rugged cliffs. Camp 3 is set up before sunset, and the evening is spent gathered around the fire beneath a brilliant desert sky.

Ascent/Descent
Bid farewell to the rugged red sandstone landscapes of the Hisma Desert and travel southeast to begin a new chapter of adventure. A four-hour 4x4 journey brings you to the historic oasis town of Tayma, once a thriving stop on ancient incense and trade routes. Home to one of Saudi Arabia’s oldest and widest wells, measuring 65 meters across, along with a restored fort and picturesque oasis, Tayma offers a window into Arabia’s pre-Islamic past.
After a traditional local lunch, continue on foot into the sweeping Tayma Desert, a vast expanse of ochre dunes and windswept gravel plains. This four-hour trek reveals a striking change in scenery, with golden sands stretching toward the horizon. Camp 4 is set near towering dunes, where the day concludes with a Bedouin-style evening of storytelling, regional cuisine, and stargazing—an immersive glimpse into desert life.

Break camp and journey further into the Tayma wilderness on a full-day trek of approximately 14 kilometres over about seven hours, crossing broad desert flats and terrain scattered with basalt rock. As the day progresses, the scenery shifts, soft sands gradually give way to ancient volcanic landscapes until the dramatic basalt pillars of AlGharameel come into view on the horizon. These towering formations signal your arrival at one of the region’s most otherworldly locations.
Camp is established in this remote expanse, far from any artificial light. After dinner beneath the open sky, gather for dedicated stargazing, with unobstructed views of constellations and planets in one of Saudi Arabia’s darkest night skies. The surreal landscape and profound silence create an unforgettable evening of celestial discovery.

Begin the final stage of your journey with an early one-hour 4x4 transfer to the protected landscapes of the Sharaan Nature Reserve, a region of sandstone cliffs, wooded wadis, and reintroduced native wildlife. From here, embark on a rewarding full-day trek through narrow canyons, open plateaus, and highland paths that reveal the reserve’s dramatic and varied scenery.
A scenic mid-trail lunch break offers a moment to reflect on the week’s experiences before continuing toward the route’s end. By late afternoon, arrive at the pickup point for your transfer to AlUla. The adventure concludes with a warm farewell from your guide and trekking team, marking the close of an unforgettable desert expedition.
If time permits, stop at the iconic Elephant Rock. Set in desert sands and climbing into the blue Arabian skies, the rock (also known as Jabal Alfil) is one of AlUla’s most impressive geological marvels.

Ascent/Descent
AlUla captivates visitors with its dramatic rock formations and canyons, its rich collection of pre-Arabic rock art, and its remarkably preserved Nabataean tombs dating back over 2,000 years. Begin your day at Hegra, the Nabataeans’ southern capital in the first century BCE. Today, you are guided by a rawee, a storyteller, through a landscape dotted with more than 100 monumental tombs, many adorned with intricate facades carved directly into the rock.
Continue on to the lush AlUla Oasis for lunch at a nearby restaurant set among verdant date farms, before setting out on your afternoon trek. The journey starts with a 3-kilometer walk along the Oasis Heritage Trail, winding through shaded palm groves, citrus orchards, and small farms. Along the way, traditional irrigation channels and mudbrick structures offer insight into the region’s agricultural past.
The path then leads into AlJadeeda, AlUla’s vibrant arts district, where pedestrian streets showcase colourful murals, contemporary art installations, and intimate galleries. Your walk concludes in AlUla Old Town, a beautifully restored historic village of narrow lanes, traditional houses, and inviting shops. Once an important stop on ancient trade routes, it now harmoniously combines preserved heritage with modern cafés and boutiques.
End the evening by enjoying dinner at one of the atmospheric restaurants tucked within the enchanting old town.

Accommodation
Journey across desert plains and mountain landscapes to Medina, following an ancient pilgrimage route. Instead of rolling sand dunes, expect a striking volcanic terrain of black lava fields, rugged peaks, and powerful historical resonance. Medina, one of Islam’s two holiest cities (alongside Mecca), is anchored by Al Masjid an Nabawi, the vast Prophet’s Mosque with ten minarets and capacity for up to one million worshippers. Join the multitudes of pilgrims gathered at the city’s centre, where the atmosphere defies description. Non-Muslims may enjoy impressive exterior views of the mosque from the perimeter of the main square.
In the afternoon, board one of Saudi Arabia’s modern high-speed trains for the short journey of under two hours to the coastal city of Jeddah. Jeddah is known as one of Saudi Arabia’s most relaxed and cosmopolitan cities, blending historic charm with contemporary luxury and a vibrant tourism scene.
Mark your arrival with refreshments along the scenic corniche. Spread out a carpet and relax on a takwa, the traditional Saudi picnic cushion, while you take in the lively ambience. As sunset descends and the call to prayer echoes across the waterfront, watch the world’s tallest fountain light up the night sky.
Later, wander through the evocative old town of Al Balad, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Its tall traditional houses and merchants’ residences showcase extraordinary architecture. The district feels like a journey back through centuries, alive with market energy, pilgrims browsing, and curious travellers. The distinctive roshan, intricately carved wooden window screens, were designed to provide shade and cooling in the humid climate and now lend the alleyways their iconic character.
Conclude your journey with a farewell seafood dinner, savouring fresh local dishes and bidding a warm “hay maa al-salama”—goodbye, until we meet again.
