Elvas is a remarkable border town shaped by centuries of conflict and resilience. Once a key defensive stronghold, Elvas played a vital role during the Portuguese Restoration War, leaving behind one of Europe’s finest examples of military architecture.
Our walk will be a mix of exploration of the existing military fortifications, through the towns, the countryside and all around good views over the Alentejo’s rolling hills.

We are in a territory that boasts immensely beautiful heritage and where white marble takes pride of place in palaces, convents, churches and statues. Apart from the splendour of its heritage, there is farmland stretching for as far as the eye can see, traditional olive and cork oak groves, and springs and streams that shape the terrain, now healthy pastures for large numbers of farm animals.
With the rise of the House of Bragança to the throne of Portugal in 1640, from permanent residence of the first family of the national nobility, Vila Viçosa Palace became one of the many royal residences scattered throughout the kingdom that we will have the chance to visit.
After a morning of culture and history, we’ll take a a short trip to nearby Estremoz, renowned for its rich winemaking tradition and enjoy a relaxed afternoon wine tasting, savouring bold reds and fresh whites in one of the region’s welcoming cellars.

Badajoz is a Spanish historic town right on the border with Portugal. Its location has shaped its identity for centuries, as it was often a strategic military stronghold. The city is best known for its impressive Moorish fortress, the Alcazaba, one of the largest in Europe, which offers sweeping views over the Guadiana River and the surrounding plains.
Today, Badajoz blends its rich past with a relaxed, modern atmosphere. Its old town features charming squares, traditional tapas bars, and landmarks like the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista.

Marvão is a small medieval town on the top of the hill, surrounded by walls and with a majestic castle that has defended the population from the Spanish armies throughout history. We can admire the spectacular views all around and into Spain.
Perched on a granite crag of the São Mamede Mountains, it was recently considered one of the "1000 Places to see before you Die", by the New York Times.
This is also an area famous for the olive oil production, which we’ll have the chance to taste in the afternoon.

Being in Campo Maior is like breathing centuries of fights and battles, now finally dormant in the ancient memory of its walls, defensive structures, barracks and castle. Legend has it that after the prehistoric and Roman occupations, it was the Moors who built the first city, Christianised in the early thirteenth century by people from neighbouring Badajoz in the kingdom of Castile.
In the afternoon we’ll have the chance of discovering a more present history, associated with coffee - a long lasting motor of the local economy, with a visit to the Coffee Science centre.

Trips are not aimed at seasoned walkers, but you should be confident in managing walks of around 1-4 miles at a leisurely pace with a few ups and downs. The programme includes longer sightseeing days which can be fairly demanding. The maximum altitude reached on this holiday is under 500m/
Usual daily walks - Distance: 3 miles; Ascent/Descent 150-200m; Terrain: good paths and tracks; Time: Short or Half Day exploration.

If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

We limit our groups to a maximum of 18 persons, plus the Adagio Leader, so that everyone has the opportunity to mix, share their love of travel and return home with new friendships. General Passport Advice
It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport page (with your photo on). Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to your home country. Passport and visa requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements.
General travel and destination advice for UK nationals is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at www.fco.gov.uk/travel and at www.gov.uk/travelaware.
Brexit Passport Advice
If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.
Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
Your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.
Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.
Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.
All breakfasts and five dinners are included in the holiday cost. You'll enjoy buffet breakfasts at the hotel, usually in the Terrace dining room with dinners taken in the hotel restaurant.
Your local guide has extensive knowledge of the area you are staying in, so the your local guide can help suggest somewhere to eat on the two nights not included in the program.
The Portuguese cuisine is very different to the Mediterranean diet you may expect to find in Spain, Greece and Italy. Portuguese dishes are usually created using locally sourced fresh ingredients, and from homemade traditional recipes shared between family generations. You may hear your local guide mention “like my Grandma used to make”. When travelling with a group, local restaurants will most likely ask you to pre-order from a set menu, which will usually consist of Portuguese soup for starters, and an option between a meat, a fish, and a vegetarian main meal option. The Portuguese cuisine includes a lot of carbohydrates, so you may find your dish includes rice and chips, ideal if you have enjoyed a long day of walking. Portugal is also famous for its seafood and fresh fish and usually it is caught, cooked and eaten the same day! During the first night of your holiday, it is usual that you may not have an option for your meal, so you may expect a typical traditional dinner of Portuguese Chicken and chips. Dietary requirements will be taken care of, and an alternative will be provided.
Vegetarian options are available if we are advised in advance so please contact our Sales & Reservations department. However please be aware that Portuguese food mostly consists of meat and fish. We do make suggestions on what ingredients to consider to produce a well-balanced and tasty meat and fish free meal, however vegetarian and vegan options can sometimes lack protein. You can, however, guarantee that ingredients will be fresh and locally sourced.
Lunches are not included but are usually taken as picnics brought from local shops, bakeries or cafes.
Footwear
Comfortable, broken in, walking boots or shoes with a good sole are recommended for this holiday. Walking shoes or other comfortable footwear will be suitable for sightseeing days.

GHIC / EHIC Cards
Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.
It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
For more information, please visit www.nhs.uk/ehic
Travel Insurance
It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.
The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.
Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.
In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.
If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.
If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.
