What does this mean?
Overview
The English Lake District is one of the most beautiful and dramatic walking regions in the UK. A compact yet varied landscape of rugged mountainsides, high summits and open ridges, interwoven with shimmering lakes and scenic lakeshore paths, it offers outstanding walking in every direction.
Designed exclusively for solo travellers, this Grade 4 walking itinerary is ideal for confident walkers looking for an active and rewarding experience. Based at Hasness House, our programme focuses on the Western Fells, combining well‑known classic routes with quieter, less‑frequented hills that showcase the wilder side of the Lake District.
You’ll be walking amongst the Wainwrights – the 214 fells immortalised by Alfred Wainwright in his iconic guides – exploring the landscapes that inspired his love of the hills and encouraged generations of walkers to venture beyond the familiar paths. From the house, peaks with intriguing names and memorable character are within easy reach and often provide the most rewarding days of the week.
The itinerary includes a varied selection of walks, from tranquil lakeside circuits to exhilarating mountain days, ensuring a rich and balanced walking programme. Routes take in classic waterside scenery around Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater, as well as more demanding ascents and ridges in the heart of the Western Fells. Expect magnificent viewpoints, open skylines, hidden tarns and a real sense of journey in this quieter corner of the Lakes.
With such a wealth of routes on the doorstep, you’ll enjoy some of the finest walking scenery in the Lake District, shared with like‑minded solo travellers and guided by expert leaders who bring the landscape to life.
