Few trails in England carry the weight of history that Hadrian's Wall does. Built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD to mark the northern limit of the Roman Empire, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches 84 miles from the Solway Firth in Cumbria to the River Tyne in Northumberland. Walking it is a journey through almost two millennia of human history, across wild frontier scenery, past well-preserved Roman forts, and through some of England's most dramatic and unspoilt landscapes.
Whether you prefer the companionship and expertise of a guided group or the freedom of exploring at your own pace, Ramble Worldwide offers a variety of Hadrian's Wall walking holidays that suit you.
The Hadrian’s Wall Path, an 84-mile (135 km) National Trail, spans the width of northern England, extending from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria on the west coast.
This incredible hike follows the Hadrian's Wall National Trail. It takes you to see the spectacular Roman defensive barrier which once guarded the north-west frontier during the Roman Empire.
Hadrian's Wall Path is one of England's finest National Trails, and one of the few long-distance routes in the country where the scenery and the history compete equally for your attention. Every mile brings something new: the high crags and sweeping moorland of the Northumberland National Park, the still waters of the Northumbrian lakes, and the gentle pastoral valleys of Cumbria as the trail winds west towards the Solway coast.
The archaeological highlights are remarkable. Chesters Roman Fort, one of the best-preserved cavalry forts in Britain, sits close to the River North Tyne. Housesteads Fort, perched dramatically along the Whin Sill ridge, offers some of the most iconic views on the entire walk. Further west, Birdoswald Roman Fort marks where the trail crosses from Northumberland into Cumbria.
Beyond the Roman heritage, the walking itself is exceptional. The central section, traversing the dramatic escarpment of the Whin Sill, is considered among the finest ridge walking in England. Elsewhere, quieter stretches follow river valleys, pass through tranquil villages, and trace the old course of the wall through open farmland. It is a trail that rewards walkers at every grade, from those tackling their first multi-day walk to experienced long-distance hikers.
Ramble Worldwide offers two ways to walk Hadrian's Wall, each suited to a different type of traveller.
Our guided Hadrian's Wall walking holiday is led by one of our experienced, knowledgeable walk leaders throughout. You will walk in a small group of typically 10 to 12 people, with all accommodation, trailhead transfers, and entrance fees taken care of. It is a sociable, fully supported way to experience the trail, ideal for those who want expert company and the reassurance of having everything organised.
Our self-guided Hadrian's Wall walking holiday puts you in control of your own pace and schedule. We arrange all accommodation, provide detailed route notes and maps, and transfer your luggage between stops so you carry only a light daypack each day. A 24-hour telephone support line is available throughout. It is the perfect choice for walkers who prefer independence but want the logistics handled for them.
Ramble Worldwide has been organising walking holidays since 1946. We bring unparalleled knowledge and passion to every walking adventure. Our Hadrian's Wall holidays are led by carefully selected, highly trained walk leaders with expert knowledge of the trail, its history, and the landscapes it passes through. Small group sizes, typically 10 to 12 on guided departures, mean a more personal, flexible experience on the path. Whether you dream of walking the Wall in the company of an expert guide or striking out independently at your own pace, explore our Hadrian's Wall walking holidays below and book with Ramble Worldwide today.
The full Hadrian's Wall Path is 84 miles long. Our guided walking holiday covers approximately 66 miles over six days of walking, with an arrival day at the start and departure after breakfast on the final morning, eight nights in total. Our self-guided holiday can also be tailored across a similar number of days.
The trail is graded Moderate. The central section, along the dramatic escarpment of the Whin Sill through Northumberland National Park, involves some sustained ascents and exposed ridgeline walking. The western sections in Cumbria are gentler. Walkers should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable covering up to 12 miles a day on varied terrain.
Our Hadrian's Wall walking holidays run from May to September. This is the most settled period for weather, with the longest days and the landscape at its most colourful. July and August are the busiest months on the trail; May, June, and September tend to be quieter.
Yes. Around half of all guests on Ramble Worldwide holidays travel solo. On our guided departures, single room options are available, and the small group format makes it easy to meet like-minded walkers from day one.
Some experience of multi-day walking is helpful, particularly for the central section of the trail. You should be comfortable walking up to 12 miles per day over consecutive days. Our walk leaders are on hand throughout guided departures to offer support and advice, and the self-guided option allows you to manage your own pace.
