Holiday Highlights

  • Scenic Cruising Past Volcanoes & Islands
  • Wildlife & Birdlife Encounters
  • Discover the unspoilt wilderness of Isafjörður and Seydisfjörður.
  • Golden Circle Experience from Reykjavík
  • Volcanic Landscapes of Lake Mývatn

This 10-night voyage aboard Bolette offers an immersive journey into Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes, combining scenic cruising with guided walking experiences in some of the country’s most captivating regions. Sailing from Newcastle, the itinerary blends time at sea with dramatic coastal passages and in-depth exploration ashore.

The experience begins with scenic cruising along Iceland’s south coast, including views of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and remote offshore islands shaped by volcanic activity. These early highlights set the tone for a journey focused on raw natural beauty, from glaciers and waterfalls to rugged coastlines and volcanic terrain.

A two-day stay in Reykjavík provides the opportunity to explore both Iceland’s vibrant capital and its surrounding natural wonders. The included Golden Circle experience showcases three of the country’s most iconic sights: Þingvellir National Park, where tectonic plates visibly meet; the Geysir geothermal area, where hot springs erupt dramatically; and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall.

From Reykjavík, the itinerary ventures into more remote regions, beginning with Ísafjörður in the Westfjords. This isolated area is one of Iceland’s least-visited yet most spectacular landscapes, characterised by steep-sided fjords, traditional fishing villages and abundant wildlife, including seabirds and whales.

In the north, Akureyri offers access to some of Iceland’s most striking geothermal and volcanic landscapes. Visits to Goðafoss waterfall, the lava formations of Dimmuborgir and the steaming geothermal fields at Námaskarð reveal the island’s dynamic geology and otherworldly scenery.

The journey continues to Seyðisfjörður, a peaceful fjord-side village in East Iceland known for its colourful wooden houses and tranquil atmosphere. Here, a gentle walk along waterfalls and valley paths offers a quieter, more reflective experience of Iceland’s natural beauty.

Throughout the voyage, carefully curated walking excursions provide a deeper connection to the landscape, ranging from moderate hikes through volcanic terrain to gentler routes in fjord communities. Scenic cruising segments add further highlights, including views of remote islands, cliffs and birdlife, enhancing the sense of exploration.

This programme is ideal for travellers seeking a balance of active discovery and relaxed cruising. With its combination of iconic sights, lesser-known regions and guided walks, it delivers a comprehensive and memorable exploration of Iceland’s diverse natural environments and unique cultural heritage.

Reykjavik

Accommodation

Arriving in Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital, you step into a city where contemporary Nordic culture meets raw natural beauty. Colourful houses, striking modern architecture and views toward distant mountains give Reykjavík a distinctive character, while its geothermal energy creates a clean, crisp atmosphere unique to Iceland.

Today’s highlight is the famous Golden Circle, Iceland’s most iconic sightseeing route. Your first stop is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates as they slowly drift apart. This dramatic rift valley is not only geologically fascinating but historically significant as the site of Iceland’s original parliament, established in 930 AD.

The journey continues to the Geysir geothermal area, where steaming vents, bubbling mud pools and erupting geysers demonstrate the immense power beneath the earth’s surface. Nearby, Strokkur geyser erupts every few minutes, sending jets of boiling water skyward in a spectacular natural display.

Finally, visit Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. Here, glacial waters plunge dramatically in two tiers into a rugged canyon, often producing rainbows in the mist. After a full day immersed in Iceland’s natural wonders, return to Reykjavík for an overnight stay, with the option to explore the city’s lively dining and cultural scene.

Day 5

Reykjavik

Meals

Accommodation

A 40-minute drive from Reykjavik brings you to the ‘Steam Valley’ just north of Hveragerdi. Hveragerdi is a geothermal small town in southwest Iceland, known as the hot spring and earthquake town due to its geological forces. We discover the area on foot, passing steaming fumaroles to a spot where it may be possible to take a dip in thermally heated waters.

A local guide will help you explore Reykjavik this afternoon. This small colourful city is home to over half of Iceland’s population and it’s a bustling centre filled with a variety of restaurants, unique shops selling local produce, galleries, museums, and a beautiful natural harbour. There will be time afterwards for you to explore Reykjavik at your own leisure.

Your second day in Reykjavík allows for deeper exploration beyond the classic highlights, focusing on Iceland’s geothermal landscapes. Travelling to the town of Hveragerði, located in one of the country’s most active geothermal regions, you’ll begin a guided walk through a valley shaped by underground heat and volcanic forces.

The terrain here is alive with bubbling hot springs, steaming vents and colourful mineral deposits that paint the earth in shades of red, orange and green. The constant activity beneath the surface offers a vivid reminder of Iceland’s position atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where tectonic forces continually shape the landscape.

As you walk through this striking environment, you’ll experience both the power and fragility of nature, with carefully maintained paths allowing safe access to this dynamic terrain. The area is also known for its innovative use of geothermal energy, including naturally heated greenhouses that support local agriculture.

Returning to Reykjavík, there may be time to explore the capital further—perhaps visiting Hallgrímskirkja church for panoramic views, strolling along the waterfront or enjoying the city’s thriving café culture—before rejoining the ship.

Day 6

Isafjörður

Accommodation

  • Time

    3.5-4 hours

  • Distance

    6 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    120m

Today you arrive in Ísafjörður, a remote and enchanting settlement in Iceland’s Westfjords, one of the country’s least-visited regions. Surrounded by steep mountains and deep fjords that carve into the coastline, the setting feels both dramatic and untouched, offering a glimpse into Iceland’s wilder side.

Your guided walk begins from the port and leads toward an avalanche ridge, following trails that pass through small wooded areas and open meadows filled with seasonal wildflowers. This is a rare area in Iceland where trees grow naturally, adding a different texture to the landscape.

As you climb gradually, panoramic views unfold across the fjord, with the town’s colourful houses appearing small against the vast scale of the surrounding mountains. The region’s isolation has helped preserve traditional ways of life, and the stillness of the landscape creates a strong sense of tranquillity.

In the afternoon, scenic cruising continues past Vigur Island—home to thriving colonies of puffins and Arctic terns—and along the dramatic cliffs of Hornbjarg and Drangaskörð, where seabirds nest on near-vertical rock faces and the coastline reveals its most rugged form.

Day 7

Akureyri

Meals

Accommodation

Arriving in Akureyri, located at the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, you find yourself in the country’s northern cultural hub. Despite its small size, the town offers a lively atmosphere, set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and calm fjord waters.

Today’s excursion takes you into the extraordinary landscapes surrounding Lake Mývatn, an area renowned for its volcanic and geothermal features. Your first stop is Goðafoss, or “Waterfall of the Gods,” where water cascades in a broad, horseshoe-shaped drop—both a natural wonder and a site steeped in Icelandic legend.

Continuing onward, you’ll visit Dimmuborgir, a field of unusual lava formations often described as a “dark fortress,” where twisted rock columns and caves create a surreal, almost mythical environment. Nearby, the geothermal area of Námaskarð (Hverir) presents a stark contrast, with steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pools and mineral-stained earth illustrating the active forces beneath your feet.

This day offers a deep dive into Iceland’s geology, showcasing the contrasts between fire and water, creation and erosion, before returning to Akureyri and the ship in the late afternoon.

Day 8

Seydisfjörður

Your final Icelandic port brings you to Seyðisfjörður, a tranquil village nestled at the end of a narrow fjord in East Iceland. Surrounded by steep mountains and cascading waterfalls, the approach into the fjord is particularly scenic, with calm waters reflecting the dramatic landscape.

The village itself is known for its preserved wooden houses, many painted in bright colours, and its artistic, creative atmosphere. A gentle guided walk takes you out into the surrounding valley, where rivers and waterfalls tumble down the mountainsides, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting.

This walk is more relaxed than previous days, allowing you to fully appreciate the serenity of East Iceland. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the region’s history and the challenges of life in such a remote environment, where harsh winters and isolation have shaped the community.

After returning to the village, there is time to explore at your own pace—perhaps visiting local galleries, enjoying a café or simply taking in the quiet beauty of the fjord—before heading back to the ship for departure.

Passports and Visas

European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Further Travel Advice

For further advice please visit:

You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.

EHIC & GHIC Cards

Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.

For more information, please visit www.nhs.uk/ehic

Fred Olsen Plastic Policy

You'll be glad to know that on Fred Olsen ships, the use of single-use plastics has been discontinued whenever feasible. This includes the prohibition of plastic straws, cocktail sticks, stirrers, cutlery, and take-away coffee cups. The officers and crew consistently explore ways to further minimize plastic usage. All waste is meticulously collected, sorted, and discharged by the ship's staff in adherence to stringent environmental regulations. This waste is then responsibly processed onshore by approved recycling and receiving operators. It's important to note that the only waste discharged at sea consists of commuted food waste and wastewater. Your cruise experience is designed with a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Responsible Travel

We are dedicated to promoting responsible travel practices that prioritise the well-being of both the environment and local communities. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimize our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible. Our walking tours are designed to immerse participants in the local culture, fostering meaningful connections with the communities we visit. We strive to leave a positive impact by engaging in responsible tourism activities, respecting local customs, and contributing to the preservation of natural landscapes. Through our commitment to responsible travel, we aim to create enriching experiences for our guests while actively contributing to the conservation of the destinations we explore.

The Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust

Unlike many other tour operators, we take pride in our unique approach. Ramble Worldwide channels its surplus profits back into various outdoor, walking-related, or environmental conservation projects in the UK through our own trust. When you choose us, you contribute to this impactful initiative.

The Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust is passionate about making the outdoors more accessible for more people from all communities. We grant funds to many organisations and have recently partnered with Mind Over Mountains, Adaptive Grand Slam, and other groups to create an enduring impact on people’s lives and to support them to enjoy the outdoors. In addition, the Trust makes many small grants to local organisations such as Ramblers Groups, Walkers are Welcome, My kind of Books and recently provided a small grant, via his scouting group, to enable a young man whose family had fallen on hard times to complete his DofE Gold award.

Patron of the Trust is the renowned explorer, Mark Wood. Over 20 years Mark has undertaken expeditions to some of the most remote parts of our planet. Our shared values make for an exciting partnership, and we believe that by standing shoulder to shoulder we can encourage people from all communities to enjoy being active outdoors in whatever way suits them best.
