It offers a perfect balance of challenging walking, cultural interest and authentic local character, making it an excellent choice for experienced walkers seeking an immersive journey through one of Europe’s lesser-known mountain regions.
What does this mean?
Overview
On this memorable journey through the Pyrenees, you follow centuries-old smuggling routes that once linked Andorra and Spain across a rugged mountain frontier. Used by traders, refugees and smugglers carrying tobacco, livestock and contraband, these hidden paths now provide the setting for an outstanding walking holiday through some of the region’s most spectacular and least-visited landscapes.
Beginning in Andorra’s beautiful glacial valleys, you walk through flower-filled alpine meadows, alongside sparkling mountain streams and beneath dramatic peaks. As the route progresses westwards, each day reveals a different side of the Pyrenees, from tranquil high-mountain pastures to traditional stone-built villages where local customs and mountain traditions remain strong.
A particular highlight is the crossing of Port de Cabús (2,302m), one of the most important historic frontier passes between Andorra and Catalonia. Once a key route for contraband traffic, the pass offers breathtaking panoramic views and a powerful sense of the history that shaped these remote borderlands. From here, you continue into Catalonia, descending through wild valleys and secluded landscapes far removed from modern life.
Along the way, you'll visit the atmospheric mountain hamlets of Tor and Os de Civís, where narrow lanes, stone houses and a slower pace of life evoke a bygone era. Surrounded by forests, mountains and rushing rivers, these villages provide a fascinating insight into the resilience and character of Pyrenean communities.
Throughout the holiday, you'll be accompanied by an experienced local mountain guide, whose in-depth knowledge brings the region's history, culture and traditions vividly to life. Their expertise not only enhances the walking experience but also provides a unique perspective on the stories of the smugglers, traders and travellers who once crossed these mountains.
Your journey concludes in the historic Catalan town of La Seu d'Urgell, where medieval streets, lively cafés and the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria provide a fitting finale. Combining rewarding walking, spectacular scenery and a rich historical narrative, the Smugglers' Trail offers a genuine sense of adventure and discovery in one of Europe's most captivating mountain regions.
