The perfect blend of guided shorter walks, sightseeing trips, and quality accommodation for a more leisurely way to discover the world.
Overview
This Adagio Collection cruise and walk experience has been thoughtfully designed for those who value slower, more meaningful travel. Blending gentle exploration ashore with scenic cruising, the itinerary allows you to fully absorb the natural beauty, heritage and tranquillity of Scotland’s northern isles.
Sailing from Liverpool aboard Borealis, your journey unfolds at an unhurried pace, taking in some of the most captivating coastal scenery in the British Isles. From the dramatic basalt formations of Fingal’s Cave to the distinct profile of Dutchman’s Cap and the rugged outline of the Small Isles, each day offers new perspectives shaped by sea, light and weather.
The walking experiences are carefully curated to suit a more relaxed style of exploration, focusing on shorter distances, manageable terrain and rewarding scenery. In Orkney, you’ll enjoy a gentle coastal walk at Marwick Head, where sweeping cliff-top views and seabird colonies define the landscape. This is complemented by visits to the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness, offering a deeper connection to the area’s ancient past.
In Shetland, a circular walk across St Ninian’s Isle invites you to cross a natural sand tombolo and explore a remote coastal environment shaped by wind and sea. The route is rich in atmosphere, with expansive views and the quiet presence of historic chapel ruins adding a sense of timelessness to the experience.
Throughout the journey, there is an emphasis on allowing space to pause and appreciate your surroundings. Whether watching seabirds glide over the water, taking in vast ocean views, or simply enjoying the rhythm of the ship as it moves between destinations, the pace is deliberately measured.
Time at sea is an integral part of the experience, offering moments to relax on deck, reflect on your travels, and enjoy the ever-changing coastal scenery. This balance between exploration and rest ensures you return home feeling enriched rather than rushed.
Perfect for those seeking a more mindful way to travel, this cruise offers a harmonious blend of gentle activity, cultural discovery and natural beauty. It is an invitation to slow down, look closer and experience Scotland’s wild island landscapes in a deeper and more rewarding way.

Itinerary & Travel
Whilst every effort will be made to adhere to the outlined itinerary and advertised programme, local conditions can change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. This may mean that routes and timings need to be amended or the order of days may change, sometimes at short notice.
Meals
Accommodation
Your journey begins in Liverpool, where you board Borealis and prepare for a relaxing voyage north. As the ship departs, the pace of everyday life begins to fade, setting the tone for a slower, more reflective travel experience. Meet the group at 5pm for a welcome drinks reception before you head into dinner.
Meals
Accommodation
Today is spent at sea, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of the voyage. As you cruise along Scotland’s west coast, you’ll pass the remarkable Fingal’s Cave, known for its striking basalt columns, followed by the distinctive Dutchman’s Cap and the rugged Small Isles. With no rush to disembark, the focus is on simply enjoying the scenery as it unfolds around you.
Meals
Accommodation
Today you arrive in Kirkwall, the historic heart of the Orkney Islands, where a landscape shaped by both nature and ancient civilisation awaits. After a short and comfortable transfer, your walking experience begins at Marwick Head, a peaceful coastal reserve known for its dramatic scenery and rich birdlife.
Setting out at a gentle pace, you’ll follow a circular route beginning at Marwick Bay, where a broad sweep of sand and sea introduces the calm, open character of Orkney’s coastline. From here, the path gradually rises towards the clifftops, revealing increasingly expansive views across the Atlantic. The terrain is manageable and steady, allowing you to walk comfortably while fully taking in your surroundings.
At the top, the landscape opens out to wide horizons, where the cliffs meet the sea below and seabirds wheel overhead. This area is an RSPB reserve, and the unhurried nature of the walk gives you time to pause, observe and absorb the quiet rhythm of the environment. The sense of space and stillness here is one of the defining qualities of Orkney, offering a moment of connection with both nature and the elements.
After completing the circular walk, the day continues at a similarly relaxed pace as you explore some of Orkney’s most important prehistoric sites. A visit to the Ring of Brodgar reveals one of the largest stone circles in the British Isles, set within an open, windswept landscape that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. Nearby, the Standing Stones of Stenness provide a more intimate but equally atmospheric glimpse into Neolithic life.
These ancient monuments are not only historically significant, but also deeply evocative, encouraging you to slow down and reflect on the passage of time within such a vast and enduring setting. With ample time at each stop, the experience complements the gentle walk earlier in the day, creating a balanced and enriching exploration.
You’ll then return to the ship in Kirkwall, carrying with you a deeper appreciation of Orkney’s natural beauty, wildlife and remarkable archaeological heritage, all experienced at a pace that allows each moment to be fully enjoyed.

Accommodation
Arriving in Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands, you’ll be welcomed by a distinctive blend of Scottish and Norse heritage set against a backdrop of expansive skies and rugged coastline. Life here moves at a gentler pace, perfectly reflecting the spirit of this Adagio journey.
Your day centres on a relaxed and immersive walk to St Ninian’s Isle, reached by crossing one of the UK’s most unusual natural features – a sweeping sand tombolo that links the island to the mainland. As you make your way across this narrow strip of sand, with the sea stretching out on either side, there is an immediate sense of stepping into a quieter, more untouched world.
Once on the island, your circular walking route unfolds at an easy pace, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the scenery rather than rush through it. The path winds along low cliffs and open coastal terrain, where panoramic views extend across the Atlantic and the shifting colours of sea and sky create an ever-changing backdrop. The landscape here is both wild and serene, shaped by wind, water and time.
A highlight of the walk is the visit to the ruins of St Ninian’s Chapel, a peaceful and atmospheric site that adds a historical dimension to the experience. This simple yet evocative setting invites a moment of pause, encouraging reflection within the stillness of the surroundings.
Throughout the walk, there are opportunities to observe local wildlife, particularly seabirds gliding effortlessly on coastal winds. With gentle terrain underfoot and a steady, unhurried pace, the experience is designed to be accessible and enjoyable, allowing you to fully connect with the landscape.
Returning to Lerwick, there is time to soak up the harbour atmosphere before rejoining the ship, carrying with you a lasting impression of Shetland’s quiet beauty and sense of space.

Accommodation
Below is the accommodation featured on this holiday across all departure dates. Please refer to the Itinerary for more detail about each night's accommodation for each departure date.
Bearing a name that was previously bestowed on an Olsen-owned vessel in the 1940s, and inspires thoughts of the Aurora Borealis, elegant Borealis proudly connects with, and represents, the Fred Olsen's Norwegian heritage. Stylish, spacious and comfortable, with capacity for fewer than 1,400 guests, she’s in keeping with their commitment to offering a more traditional style of cruising.
But while Borealis’ capacity is smaller than many cruise vessels, she’s still one of the largest ships, by size, in the Fred Olsen fleet. On board Borealis you’ll find you’re never overcrowded. There is always ample room in which to indulge yourself in the stylish dining venues, enjoy a glass of your favourite drink and fantastic entertainment at the bars, lounges and theatres and enjoy time at the all-season pool. And of course, with friendly staff providing an excellent personal and attentive service, there’s an intimate feel to the on board experience too.
On board facilities include a swimming pool, a fitness centre including a sauna, steam room and beauty salon. There are sun decks, several lounges and bars and several restaurants.
A deck plan of the ship can be found here.

Further Health Advice
For further advice please visit:
You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.
GHIC / EHIC Cards
Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.
It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
