Cobbled Streets, Local Tables and Afternoons With Nowhere to Be: The Case for a Gentle Walking Holiday

There's a particular kind of travel that nobody really talks about until they've tried it. You're not covering ground for the sake of it. You're not ticking off a checklist. You're walking into a medieval town at ten in the morning, finding a bakery that's been there since your grandparents' time, and realising you have the rest of the day to do exactly as you please.

That's what gentle walking holidays are built around. And it's why our Adagio Collection exists.

A gentler kind of walking holiday

Adagio is a word borrowed from music, where it means slow, at ease, graceful in pace. If you haven't come across it in a travel context before, that's precisely the point: most people searching for this kind of trip don't know what to call it. They just know they want to walk, but not too far. They want beautiful places, good food, and time that feels genuinely theirs.

Our Adagio holidays sit at Grade 1 and Grade 2 on our walking scale. At Grade 1, you're looking at gentle strolls of up to three miles with no more than 50 metres of ascent. Grade 2 adds a little more variety, with walks of around three miles through slightly more undulating terrain. In mountainous destinations, cable cars and mountain trains do the climbing for you, so you still arrive at extraordinary viewpoints without a punishing ascent to reach them.

Comfortable walking shoes are all you need. No heavy boots, no trekking poles, no training plan. Just a pair of shoes you'd wear for a long afternoon in a city, and a willingness to see where the morning takes you.

Who are more relaxed walking holidays for?

Newcomers to walking holidays, certainly. If you've never done one before and aren't sure what to expect, an easy walking holiday is the most enjoyable place to start. The days are structured but unhurried, the groups are small, and there's always a knowledgeable leader on hand who knows the terrain, the history, and the best place to stop for lunch.

But experienced walkers choose Adagio trips too, and often for exactly the opposite reason. They've done the long days and the challenging terrain. They know what it feels like to arrive somewhere extraordinary having earned it on foot. What they want now is to arrive somewhere extraordinary and actually spend time there. That's a different kind of reward, and for many people, a more lasting one.

The common thread isn't fitness level or age. It's an interest in places: in the stories behind them, the food that comes from them, the people who live in them.

Where gentle walking holidays can take you

This is where the Adagio Collection earns its place. These are not gentle trips to gentle destinations. They take you to some of the most captivating parts of the world, with itineraries built around getting properly under the skin of each place.

Italy's Prosecco Hills follows the 29-mile Prosecco Wine Road through rolling vineyards, with tastings at family-run wineries and evenings in neighbourhood restaurants. The walking is leisurely; the wine is not to be underestimated.

Tuscany's Treasures moves between Florence, Siena, Lucca and the medieval hilltop of Montecatini Alto, with an olive oil masterclass and a cooking lesson woven into the week. You cover ground on foot and by coach, spending genuine time in each place rather than arriving just long enough to take a photograph.

The Lazy Alps is based in Wengen, a car-free village in the Bernese Oberland with the Jungfrau filling the horizon. The region's famous network of cable cars and rack railways takes you up to high alpine terrain; you walk the gentler paths between, through flower meadows with views that most people only see from a distance.

Canterbury and Kent is one for those who prefer to stay closer to home without compromising on richness. Blue Badge guided walks through one of England's great cathedral cities, time in the medieval streets of Sandwich, and the particular pleasure of discovering that somewhere familiar has much more to offer than you'd expected.

Beyond these, the Adagio Collection ranges from the Menorcan coast and the sun-warmed streets of Andalucia to the Scottish Highlands and the lakes of Northern Italy. The geography varies enormously. What doesn't change is the approach: quality accommodation, most meals included, small groups of ten to fourteen people, and leaders who bring each destination to life.

What sets this style of travel apart

The most important thing an easy walking holiday gives you is permission. Permission to stop when something catches your attention. To linger over lunch because the conversation is good. To spend an afternoon in a market rather than pressing on to the next viewpoint.

Walking at a gentle pace through a place changes what you notice. You find the street that doesn't appear on maps. You end up in a conversation with someone who recommends a restaurant you'd never have found otherwise. You sit in a square as the light shifts and notice the way the stone changes colour, the swallows cutting low overhead, the particular quality of an evening in a place that's been lived in for centuries.

Our leaders are a significant part of what makes this work. They're not simply there to navigate; they know the history, the culture, and the rhythm of each destination. They know which church is worth going inside, which market stall does the best local cheese, and when to let the group simply be somewhere without filling the silence.

What to expect on the walks

A typical Adagio morning might involve two to three hours of walking, broken up with stops along the way. The afternoon is often given over to sightseeing, free time, or a gentle coach transfer to the next location. Evenings are unhurried, with dinners at locally-chosen restaurants that reflect wherever you happen to be.

The pace is set by the group, and leaders are experienced at making sure it suits everyone. There's no pressure to keep up and no sense that you're holding anyone back. That's rather the point.

Booking is straightforward. All local transport, entrance fees, and most meals are included, so there's very little to arrange once you've confirmed your place. Single travellers are warmly welcomed; roughly half of those on any Ramble Worldwide departure travel solo.
