Discover the Peak District and the superb hiking in the wild, northern section of the Dark Peak with the chance to summit Kinder Scout.
What does this mean?
Overview
Experience the undiscovered country of the northern Peak District, in the area known as ‘The Dark Peak’. Climb Kinder Scout, traverse Derwent Edge and explore the unique moorland and gritstone tors that the area is famous for on some of the most challenging and rewarding walks in the Peak District National Park. Along the way you’ll be able to enjoy the delights of the historic town of Buxton.
Kick-off your hiking weekend with a walk along Derwent Edge to soak up some of the best views in the Peak District. You’ll climb from Ladybower Reservoir up steep, wood-lined ravines, past the iconic Wheel Stones, then onto the unusual rock feature known as Salt Cellar. Explore Dovestone Tor and Back Tor (1,765ft), site of the highest trig point, with the chance to revel in the bleak but beautiful upland plateau.
Next, you’ll climb Kinder Scout to claim the highest point in the Peak District. Dark gritstone, steep scrambles and some glorious peat countryside comprising bogs, hags and groughs, and criss-crossed by streams, lead to unforgettable views across the Edale Valley. Look out too for the rugged waterfall of Kinder Downfall. This untamed wilderness, forever associated with the 1932 Mass Trespass, represents true freedom to roam.
