Journey to a kingdom far, far away and discover a land shrouded in mystery. Where else in the world can you visit ‘The land of the Thunderbolt’ and look across the ‘Five Treasures in the Great Snow’?

You start in Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, the name was officially changed in 2001, as captivating a city as you will find. It is a quintessential Indian city, an assault on the senses, bigger, brighter, louder combined with serene beauty and calm.

Youi fly and drive up to Darjeeling, set against a backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas and overlooked by imposing Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s 3rd highest mountain. The name roughly translates as the ‘Five Treasures in the Great Snow’. Darjeeling, in the heart of the tea producing region of India, is a highlight of the British Colonial Raj era. The town is situated at around 2100m. It is inhabited by residents from all over the Eastern Himalayas. It’s a fascinating place and during your time we plan to explore the town, take a journey on the narrow gauge railway and visit Tiger Hill at sunrise, which has an unparalleled 360° Himalayan panorama.

You leave Darjeeling for the hill station of Kalimpong. Here you’ll discover the town and walk in the surrounding countryside and visit a traditional village, where you spend time with the villagers to see how they live, and learn about their culture and traditions.

Bhutan enjoys what may be an enviable position in the tourist world. It is so difficult to reach and restricts the entry of visitors. As a result, Bhutan remains lovely, near pristine and a joy to visit. You’ll walk, explore and sightsee from Phuntsholing, Thimphu and Paro, gaining an insight to the Bhutanese way of life. You’ll also visit Tiger’s Nest – a true highlight of a visit to Bhutan. You fly back to Kolkata to finish sightseeing in this engaging city.

Trips comprise of day walks with plenty of ups and downs, some steep and rough ground will be encountered at times and walks averaging 7 miles with 650m of ascent / descent. Some holidays will cover longer distances on easier paths, others will be shorter walks but have more demanding ascents and terrain.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 7 miles; Ascent/Descent 650m; Terrain: generally decent paths and tracks with some steeper sections; Walking Time: Day walks.

Please ensure to read the 'Proposed Itinerary' for a more accurate description of daily activities on each holiday, and if unsure please contact one of our friendly experts for advice.

Walks & Excursions

The highest walking we plan to do on this holiday will generally be around 2800m, although if we have the opportunity to visit The Tiger’s Nest, this will be at a height of 3,000m. On arrival in Paro (2100m) we have time to acclimatise to the altitude.

There will be days on the tour where the sightseeing element will fill most of the day and our excursions can vary from half a day to a full day. Although walking will make up a substantial part of the sightseeing programme, there will be days which focus on the walking element of the programme. The walks will not be too strenuous over a prolonged period, parts may be on uneven ground, muddy or dusty, according to the weather, with only the occasional steep section or rough path. Some of the sites we visit may include a good number of steps.

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we've included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity program for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Holiday Budgeting

As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. For a rough estimate, budgeting around £10-£20 per person per day for lunches and drinks is a helpful guideline.

Currency in India

The currency in India is the Rupee (Rs). It is not usually possible to buy or sell Indian currency outside India.  All prices in India will be listed in Rupees. It is possible  to exchange small amounts of cash (take some cash with you - US Dollars and Sterling being the easiest ) and the larger towns have banks with ATMs where you can withdraw Rupees (ensure your debit card is linked with Visa or Mastercard). If in doubt, check with your bank prior to travel that you will able to withdraw cash in India.

Tipping

In your holiday price, we've included tipping for our local suppliers, covering hotel and restaurant staff, local guides, and drivers. Should you wish to make an extra contribution for a specific service, this should be given directly to the recipient at your discretion.

Tour Leaders & Local Guides

Tour Leaders

Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organized they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations.  Your tour leader takes care of all the local administration, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.

Leader's Evening Briefing

Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the program for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organized group program, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.

Meals

Many Brits are familiar with the ubiquitous Indian restaurant on every high street in the UK. Whilst in India you will have a chance to experience a far greater variety of food than anything you would find in your local take away. The food is prepared in the local style in the varied locations we visit. Spicy food is available but easily avoided. Dishes with meat or vegetables are always available. The food served in the mountains is very different from that served on the plains. Regardless of your dietary requirements or lifestyle choices you will be able to enjoy plenty of excellent food. Breakfasts are taken in the hotel and will commonly be buffet style. Lunches where included will be a boxed lunch or taken in local restaurants. Evening meals vary between huge buffets in hotels to restaurant meals which may be buffet or consist of items ordered form a menu.

You will notice some similarities and some differences between the food served in India and that served in Bhutan. The Bhutanese are very fond of chillis and some dishes can be hot. If making random choices from a menu please check with the local guide as you might be in for a shock. However the Bhutanese are aware the rest of the world does not necessarily share their passion for eye watering spice. You will be offered plenty of choice but never excessive spice, unless you ask for it! Potatoes and lentils predominate as staples. Meat is available but vegetarians should have no issues getting fed.

Air Pollution

Cities may at times experience periods of poor air quality. If you suffer from a respiratory condition you may wish to seek advice from your doctor prior to travel.

Diarrhoea & Boiled Water

Don’t forget to exercise caution with what you eat to avoid upset stomachs and stay away from unpeeled fruit and vegetables, salad and do not have ice in your drinks. Hot, fresh cooked food, where possible, is best.

Hand washing facilities may be poor or unavailable when travelling, we therefore strongly advise you to carry antibacterial sanitizing gel and / or hand wipes at all times and use to them regularly.

Drinking or cleaning teeth in un-boiled water is not recommended.  Bottled pure water is inexpensive and widely available in shops, at hotels, and on the coach. Make sure you only buy sealed bottles.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

Our house broker MPI should be considered for whom we are an affiliate and contact information is on our website and will be referred to in your booking confirmation.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.

Personal Safety

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is your go-to for the latest info on security, local laws, and the nitty-gritty of passports and visas at www.gov.uk/travelaware. Make sure to take a quick peek at the current advice for your upcoming destination—it'll only take a few minutes.

When you're out and about, stay aware of your surroundings. Take smart precautions with your credit cards and passport, and maybe tone down the flashy accessories. Less is more, especially when it comes to carrying cash—just enough for the day will do. Consider using a money belt for that extra layer of security. Stay alert, stay safe, and make the most of your travels!

Cultural Awareness

Responsible Travel

We are dedicated to promoting responsible travel practices that prioritize the well-being of both the environment and local communities. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimize our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible. Our walking tours are designed to immerse participants in the local culture, fostering meaningful connections with the communities we visit. We strive to leave a positive impact by engaging in responsible tourism activities, respecting local customs, and contributing to the preservation of natural landscapes. Through our commitment to responsible travel, we aim to create enriching experiences for our guests while actively contributing to the conservation of the destinations we explore.

The Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust

Unlike many other tour operators, we take pride in our unique approach. Ramble Worldwide channels its surplus profits back into various outdoor, walking-related, or environmental conservation projects in the UK through our own trust. When you choose us, you contribute to this impactful initiative.

The primary focus of our Trust's financial support is directed towards Britain's premier walking charity, The Ramblers. They play a crucial role in advocating the benefits and significance of walking to the British public. Additionally, our Trust invites applications for small grants from local organizations in the UK that require support for walking-oriented activities. This encompasses initiatives such as establishing footpaths and bridleways, funding for the reconstruction of bridges and refurbishing huts, and bursary funding for organisations that support individuals to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors..

For more comprehensive details, please visit the 'About' section on our website and click on the Charitable Trust link. Your choice to travel with us goes beyond a memorable vacation; it contributes to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on our community and environment.

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.

Hayden Hall

Heart & Sole is proud to sponsor Hayden Hall, private, a non-profit relief and development association based in Darjeeling. Hayden Hall works to define and solve the problems of women and those that their children, families and communities face by utilizing a variety of methods to ensure self-sufficiency. Some of the services they provide include healthcare, including ante natal, vocational training and education. We will make a visit to Hayden Hall during our time in Darjeeling so that you can see the assistance they provide.

By travelling with us on this holiday, in addition to experiencing the joy of visiting new places, you can help make a difference.

Staying In Touch
