Arrival into Jeddah

Meals

Accommodation

Jeddah, a thriving commercial hub on the western coast of Saudi Arabia along the Red Sea, is home to the region’s second busiest seaport. As the main gateway to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, Jeddah welcomes over a million pilgrims annually on their journey to perform the Hajj.

Despite its spiritual significance, Jeddah is renowned as Saudi Arabia’s most liberal city and a top tourist destination. Visitors can experience the perfect blend of historic charm and modern luxury, from stunning ancient architecture to world-class amenities.

Celebrate your arrival in the Kingdom with sunset drinks along Jeddah’s picturesque corniche.  As evening falls, join the locals in witnessing the mesmerizing call to prayer and the spectacular activation of the world’s tallest fountain along the beach walk. Conclude your first day in Saudi Arabia with a welcome dinner, capturing the dynamic spirit of modern Jeddah.

Day 2

Exploring Jeddah

Meals

Breakfast & Lunch

Accommodation

Start your day with a deep dive into Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage at the Tayebat Museum, the perfect introduction to Islam, Saudi history, and the city of Jeddah. The museum showcases life-size examples of traditional Saudi and Jeddahwi architecture, everyday tools and utensils, local art, and detailed insights into the Two Holy Cities, Mecca and Medina. This immersive experience provides a solid foundation for understanding the cultural and religious context before venturing into the city.

Next, discover Jeddah’s vibrant culinary scene, shaped by its prime location on the Red Sea. Begin at the Central Fish Market, a bustling hub where fresh seafood, from shrimp, lobster, and squid to species unique to the Red Sea is on full display. Navigate the market like a local: select your catch, have it weighed, and receive a ticket for the cleaning station. Your seafood can then be prepared at an on-site restaurant or taken home. For a more leisurely experience, enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at a nearby eatery.

After lunch, visit the House of Islamic Arts, home to a stunning collection of Islamic art, artifacts, and rare manuscripts. This cultural gem offers profound insight into the artistic traditions and heritage of the Islamic world.

Continue your exploration with a walk through Al Balad, Jeddah’s historic old town and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. Al Balad’s multi-story merchant houses, traditional architecture, and intricate roshan wooden window screens provide a fascinating glimpse into life centuries ago. Wander through its bustling alleys, where traders, pilgrims, and tourists mingle, and experience the authentic sights, sounds, and aromas of a classic Middle Eastern souk. In a rapidly modernizing kingdom, Al Balad remains one of the few places to experience the true historical essence of Saudi Arabia.

Day 3

Jeddah - Taif

Meals

Breakfast & Lunch

  • Time

    3 hours

  • Distance

    3 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    129/134m

The mountains are calling! Start your engines for one of Saudi Arabia’s most breath taking road trips. Today’s journey climbs from sea level along the winding road of Al Hada, reaching 2,200 meters above sea level, before arriving in the mountain city of Taif. Known for its elevated plateau, Taif has long served as a hub for local farmers to buy, sell, and socialize.

Begin your exploration at the Taif local market, a lively mix of shops offering traditional Saudi items. Browse colourful thobes and abayas, the cloaks worn by men and women, alongside tools and equipment for farmers. Unlike more tourist-heavy destinations, this market is mainly visited by pilgrims heading to nearby Islamic sites or the famous rose farms, which bloom spectacularly in April.

After a satisfying lunch at a local restaurant in Taif, leave the city behind for a scenic trek in the surrounding hills. The three-hour hike follows a narrow, rocky trail with gentle ups and downs. Though not overly difficult, the path offers little shade.

The landscape here is a lush contrast to Saudi Arabia’s deserts, dotted with wild lavender, juniper trees, red roses, and yellow wildflowers, all set against sweeping panoramic views. Reach a hilltop cave once used by farmers as shelter and take in the extraordinary scenery. Though the area is home to mountain lynxes and Arabian wolves, sightings are rare. After soaking in the vistas, descend back along the same trail, completing a day of adventure and discovery in the Taif mountains.

Day 4

Al Bahah

Meals

Breakfast & Lunch

Embark on an unforgettable road trip along the Sarawat Mountains, breathing in crisp, refreshing mountain air. The journey from Taif to Abha is considered one of the most scenic drives in the Arabian Peninsula, offering dramatic views of sheer cliffs, ancient watchtower ruins, and tranquil mountain settlements seemingly frozen in time. Lush terraced fields challenge the common perception of Saudi Arabia as a desert land, with plenty of opportunities to pause and explore these captivating landscapes, especially near Al Bahah.

Al Bahah, the capital of the region, is one of Saudi Arabia’s hidden gems. Perched at around 2,200 meters above sea level, the city enjoys a mild, pleasant climate and is surrounded by more than forty forests, including Raghdan, Al-Zareeb, and Baidan, offering some of the most spectacular vistas in the country. For breath taking views, visit Raghadan Park, which overlooks a dramatic wadi gorge.

Nestled deep within the gorge is the UNESCO-listed village of Thee Ain, accessed via a winding cliffside road. This remarkably preserved village provides a fascinating glimpse into traditional life. Wander through steep alleyways, explore historic houses, and climb narrow staircases to reach rooftops overlooking the valley. A torch can be useful for navigating the darker passageways.

Day 5

Al Shaaf

Meals

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, continue your overland adventure with a first stop at Al Malad Castle, located in the historic village of Al Malad. This dual fortress, perched on a hill along the commercial route to Asir, was built by two brothers over four centuries ago. Originally designed for military defence, it also served as a storage site for provisions.

Next, visit Baljurashi, a town famed for its Saturday historical market, where traditional Saudi produce, handcrafted goods, and local honey are on display, but only on market day. Explore the Baljurashi Heritage Village and its small museum, then enjoy lunch before resuming the journey.

Arrive at a scenic cliffside village known for its terraced farms and striking stone architecture. Unlike desert regions, homes, mosques, and forts here are constructed from sturdy stone and often feature elegant white marble accents. Interiors and doors are adorned with vibrant geometric patterns in red, yellow, green, and white, reflecting traditional design.

Take a short walk into the village and enter one of its charming homes for a local homestay experience. Meals are enjoyed seated on the floor, and mattresses are laid out in traditional style when it’s time to sleep. As sunset approaches, mist often rolls in from the valley, briefly shrouding the landscape before giving way to a star-filled night sky from the rooftop. If time allows, stroll through the village and surrounding areas, enjoying the scenic views, herds of goats, and the occasional playful monkey—though keep a watchful eye!

Day 6

Abha

Meals

Breakfast & Lunch

  • Time

    2.5 hours

  • Distance

    2.5 miles

After a hearty local breakfast prepared by your host family, hit the road from Al Shaaf, traveling along the scenic mountain roads toward Tanomah, a hidden gem in the Aseer Highlands. Renowned for its lush valleys and dramatic rock formations, Tanomah offers a serene escape into nature.

Upon arrival, embark on the Jurassic Park Hike, one of Saudi Arabia’s most breath taking trails. The path winds past towering cliffs, glittering boulders, and a vibrant green wadi that feels like stepping into a prehistoric world. Each twist of the trail reveals awe-inspiring vistas, with the rocky terrain contrasting beautifully against the greenery below.

After the hike, enjoy a well-deserved local lunch before continuing the drive to Abha, arriving in the evening to settle in amid the cool mountain air. Begin your evening exploration at Abha’s Art Street, a charming avenue lined with striking purple jacaranda trees and adorned with colourful artworks. This creative hub attracts artists from across the country, offering a lively cultural atmosphere.

As sunset approaches, head to the Al Dabab walkway, perched on a cliff edge, perfect for an evening stroll or social gathering. Take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and let your imagination wander, dreaming of the spectacular landscapes yet to come on your Aseer adventure.

Day 7

Abha

Meals

Breakfast & Lunch

Abha and the wider Asir region invite travellers to explore deeper, highlighting rich traditions, distinctive architecture, and vibrant local heritage. The final chapter of this mountain journey promises some of the most memorable experiences.

Begin a guided hike on Jabal Sawda, believed to be the highest peak in Saudi Arabia. Follow the trail for approximately three hours through fragrant juniper forests and along ridges offering sweeping mountain vistas. The descent reveals lush valleys and striking landscapes, challenging the common perception of Saudi Arabia as a country defined solely by desert.

After the hike, continue by car along a winding mountain road toward Rijal Alma, a UNESCO-listed heritage village. This remarkable village features around 60 multi-storey stone houses clinging to the slopes. Designed to remain cool in summer and warm in winter, these fortress-like homes stand as enduring symbols of Asir’s architectural and cultural legacy.

Delve further into the region’s heritage at the Fatima Museum of Aseeri Women, which showcases traditional home design, decoration, and Asiri natural painting techniques passed down through generations of women. Each colour and pattern carries meaning, bringing to life the vibrant interiors and artistic traditions of the homes you visit in the region.
