I have travelled widely throughout mainland Greece and the islands. In the 1980s, I taught music in Hania, Crete, for 10 years and married into a Greek family.
People often ask me where my favourite place is. My answer is 'all of them' because they are all so different and fascinating: from the lush green and scenic hiking trails of Andros, the idyllic car-free island of Hydra, the volcanic rocky landscapes of Milos and Santorini, the pretty mountain villages of Naxos and Tinos, the gorges of Crete, the spring flowers of the Peloponnese, the evergreen forests of Halkidiki, the tranquil Ionian beaches, to history steeped Rhodes and the countless archaeological sites all over Greece.
There is always something new to discover, so I will continue my Greek Odyssey for as long as I can. There are approximately 6,000 Greek islands altogether and only 227 are inhabited.
I seek out the quieter corners of Greece, where fewer tourists venture, away from the package holiday resorts and airports. Though this means travelling by ferry or road for a few hours, reaching unspoilt and authentic parts of Greece is worth it. In such places, you will feel that you have stepped back in time, experienced the local Greek community and traditions, and been welcomed with genuine Greek hospitality and warmth.
