Sinharaja to Ceylon tea country: Walking Sri Lanka's landscapes – A guide's journal, part 2 of 3

Sri Lanka Walking Holidays: Rainforests to Tea Plantations

From India's monuments to Sri Lanka's emerald landscapes

From India's monumental marble to Sri Lanka's emerald landscapes, the contrast couldn't be more spectacular. As we touch down, the island greets us with a different kind of beauty entirely, one that's lush, layered, and alive with possibility.

Walking through Sinharaja Rain Forest

The Sinharaja Rain Forest wraps around us immediately, a world of tropical sounds and sudden flashes of movement. The air feels different here, thick with moisture and life. Birds call from the canopy above, their songs echoing through the dense green. Every step reveals something new, a burst of colour, a rustle in the undergrowth, the constant hum of an ecosystem thriving in its natural state.

This is where we learn our first practical lesson: leech socks are highly recommended. Long trousers with socks tucked in become our forest uniform, protection against the tiny inhabitants who call this rainforest home. It's a small adjustment that makes all the difference, allowing us to lose ourselves in the forest's wonders without distraction.

Exploring Sri Lanka's diverse landscapes

The landscapes shift constantly as we move through the country. Tea plantations cascade down hillsides in perfect emerald rows, mist settling into valleys like gentle breath. Waterfalls tumble from heights we can barely comprehend, their spray catching the light. Mountain peaks wear clouds like shawls, revealing and concealing views with delightful unpredictability.

One afternoon brings a completely unexpected pleasure. We visit a working gem mine, watching miners extract and polish Sri Lanka's famous stones. The process is fascinating, hands working with centuries of knowledge and skill. It's one of those authentic moments that wasn't on our mental itinerary but adds richness we'll remember long after.

What makes Sri Lanka special for walkers

Our fellow guests share what captures them most: the sheer variety in such a compact country amazes everyone. From tropical rainforests to misty tea hills, from coastal beauty to mountain grandeur, Sri Lanka offers an extraordinary range of experiences. The warmth of our local guides stands out too, their passion for their country and culture making every day engaging and deeply insightful.

Tasting Sri Lankan cuisine and culture

The journey continues to unfold in delicious ways. Sri Lankan curries arrive at our table with rice, coconut sambol, and crispy poppadoms, each bite revealing new flavours. In the hill country, we drink freshly brewed Ceylon tea at its very source, the taste incomparable to anything we've had before.

Tuk-tuk rides add their own particular joy, zipping through tea country with the wind in our faces and endless green rolling past. The rhythm here feels different from India, more relaxed perhaps, but no less captivating. Every element combines to create something truly special.

Our Sri Lankan experience features on the Sri Lankan Trails walking holiday.
